A film about kamikaze pilots has been playing to packed theaters from Hokkaido to Kyushu since its release in December of 2013, becoming one of the top-grossing Japanese productions of all time. In addition to attracting the admiration of Prime Minster Shinzo Abe, “The Eternal Zero” has drawn a fair amount of criticism for being the latest in a string of recent films that mythologize the Japanese role in World War II.

They are available but they’re REALLY childish and boring. Grossly amateurish and emotional. As bad as Russian war movies and equally loaded with simple-minded propaganda.

Don’t waste your money..

Ah, I hope you hated the North Koreans just as much. PCH was during the Korean War.

That is really funny!

I was very young when I saw it, and they all look alike anyway! /s

Thanks for the history lesson.

We were visiting Hawaii a few years back and made the required stop at Pearl Harbor and the Arizona. About 1 and 3 people in line for the Arizona memorial were Asian and very likely Japanese. I could tell by the language and facial features. Not certain why they were visiting

For the same reason southerners visit Ft. Sumter.

EXPECT THIS

Whether we like it or not, Japan will now have to MAN-UP given the threat from China and our unilateral disarming. This is part of the effort. Building a nuke arsenal is another part, and I’m sure they’re well along there.

If we don’t like it, that’s tough. No different than thinking we have any influence on Putin. We are a burned-out laughing stock, more interested in figuring out how to populat our military with (people of alternative lifestyles) than being able to project force.

I remember watching "Pork Chop Hill" as a youngster. I hated the Japs.

At Pork Chop Hill (1953), we were fighting mosttly Chicoms and perhaps a few Norks.

I still keep in touch with some old associates from my time working in a Japanese company, and have the feeling many Japanese are learning most of what they know about the war from these movies.

Kinda like Americans educated from about 1980 onward.

The Japanese soldier had a solemn duty in WWII, sit and wait to be killed by US service members.

The boat talking wife and me out to the Arizona Memorial was 2/3rds populated with Japanese tourists. I asked one fellow in his 20s why so many Japanese were on the tour.
He said, he and his wife wanted to see what their fathers and grandfathers had done. They simply couldn't believe the Pacific War (Nihon for WW II) had happened as it was not taught in school in Japan.

Hawaii is a popular destination for Japanese tourists. There were a lot of Japanese among the crowds visiting Arizona the last time I was there.

At the time, Hawaii wasn't as pricey as usual due to a recession in Japan.

Good point.

But just as long as they are respectful. And they were although they loved their cigarettes. There was a heavy cloud hanging over us.

And probably mostly old stories from their granddad for them since none of them fought in the war and they were at least one generation removed.

Why on earth did you find it strange?

I’m sure many Germans and Italians visit WWII sites in Europe.

It’s history.

And then you point over to the USS Missouri and say, “Your country couldn’t sink that one!” ;-)
