(Reuters) - In a crisis situation or evacuation for natural disasters such as hurricanes and wildfires, people with no criminal record would be allowed to carry a firearm without a permit, under a bill approved Friday by the Florida House of Representatives.
"The bells of liberty are surely ringing throughout Florida today," said Representative Heather Dawes Fitzenhagen, a Fort Myers Republican who sponsored the bill lifting permit requirements for concealed weapons in an emergency declared by the governor or local authorities.
"By passing this bill, you will ensure that no Floridian, in lawful possession of a firearm, must leave it behind."
The House voted 80-36 to send the bill (HB 209) to the state Senate, where a companion bill is ready for a floor vote that would put the measure on Governor Rick Scott's desk later this month.

"They will face a different reality. You are talking about introducing concealed firearms into an environment that is already teeming with tension," he said. "I hope that tragedy will not be a byproduct of our decision here today."

The problems we face down here are related more to the influx of 'retired' democrats than locals.
This is really an anti-targeting bill. It keeps the police from acting as authority-empowered weapons thieves.
Of course, they oppose it. It takes away their power in an emergency.
Just how are people supposed to call the police or the sheriff if the power's out?
I guess that’s progress - I had no permit after Katrina and carried my weapon openly in the direct aftermath. Never had an iota of an issue with LEOs or others.
I have some news for the Florida House - if it’s an emergency, people are going to be carrying, REGARDLESS of your approval.
I don’t like criminals any better than the next guy but the fact someone is a criminal doesn’t mean they have no need to defend themselves.
It’s nice when state law finally catches up with the Second Amendment to the Constitution of the United States, which is the “supreme law of the land”. I can’t wait for state law in Maryland, Massachusetts, New York, New Jersey, Illinois, California, and other pre-fascist states to catch up also.
Doesnt matter if you can call them. In an emergency they aint coming.
Only in 21st Century America after a full century of Progressivism would they even attempt to legislate something that is an unspoken truth and backed up by the Constitution. Sad to see how far we have fallen
Somebody cut me off in traffic and I just backed off to give him more clearance. Before I could stop him my high-strung New Yorker passenger reached over and hit my horn and yelled at the guy. Then he said, “How can you be so calm and polite to an *sshole like that?” I said, “I never engage in tit-for-tat road rage. I’m carrying a gun. Legal or not it’s possible he has one too. The situation could elevate in moments to something I’d have to live with. It’s much easier to realize that maybe he didn’t mean the stupid driving as a message. I know I’ve accidently cut people off because I had no idea they were there. Maybe he did too.”
So, some of us are more polite than without the gun, though I never yelled at anybody on the road. On the other and some people are hyper aggressive. But I think once everybody is carrying a gun the hyper aggressive guys will suddently calm way down.
Then, to drive home your point, you shot the New Yorker, RIGHT? LOL!
I’m with you. I give cRaZy@sS drivers a WIDE berth!
Exactly correct Pearls: this is a constraint on what law enforcement can come after you for. I doubt it will result in one more or less guns being kept near to hand during an emergency.

This is just the kind of legislation we need in all fronts. Take a progressive premise, and legislate the opposite...not differing, but 180 degrees opposite. Obama wants gun control during a crisis (which he hopes happens so he can finish the takeover), so we legislate something just as radical, but with a directly opposite premise, NO GUN CONTROL, NO PERMITS NEEDED. We should be doing this with EPA, IRS. DOJ.....and all the rest if the progressive alphabet stew.
I don’t think you need law. People will be packin’.
There are essentially two political parties: Those that want to put all power in the hands of the elite; and those that trust the people.
The Republicans in Florida just said: We trust the People!
The Democrats have made clear: Power to the Elite!

Texas treats your car as an extension of your home. No permit needed to carry a gun in a car. No wild-west shoot outs except when drug wars are involved. And they don’t obey laws anyway
To be constitutionally correct, the legislation should have simply gone the whole route to no permits needed. With a hostile media, there was not enough political fortitude to do that.
This bill is a “good first step” though, as the “progressives” say.
That creature gives me the creeps!
Will this be open carry for a hand gun? I know Biden would support my walking around with my shotgun.
