A Nevada cattle rancher appears to have won his week-long battle with the federal government over a controversial cattle roundup that had led to the arrest of several protesters.
Cliven Bundy went head to head with the Bureau of Land Management over the removal of hundreds of his cattle from federal land, where the government said they were grazing illegally.
Bundy claims his herd of roughly 900 cattle have grazed on the land along the riverbed near Bunkerville, 80 miles northeast of Las Vegas, since 1870 and threatened a "range war" against the BLM on the Bundy Ranch website after one of his sons was arrested while protesting the removal of the cattle.
"I have no contract with the United States government," Bundy said. "I was paying grazing fees for management and that's what BLM was supposed to be, land managers and they were managing my ranch out of business, so I refused to pay."
The federal government had countered that Bundy "owes the American people in excess of $1 million " in unpaid grazing fees and "refuses to abide by the law of land, despite many opportunities over the last 20 years to do so."
However, today the BLM said it would not enforce a court order to remove the cattle and was pulling out of the area.
"Based on information about conditions on the ground, and in consultation with law enforcement, we have made a decision to conclude the cattle gather because of our serious concern about the safety of employees and members of the public," BLM Director Neil Kornze said.

The usage began with an understanding that no fees were required, nor would be. Insofar as reasonable fees were introduced, seems he paid them. Problem now seems the fees are changed with intent to drive him out - THAT is intolerable.I might agree with that if the charge weren't $1.35/head. Private grazing fees are usually 4x to 10x that. I don't really see how that price would drive a rancher out.
They need to be compelled to return what they stole. There are legal avenues for doing that. You just need a compelling legal argument.
Now we know what the grazing fees pay for.
Bundy has in fact paid fees to Clark County, Nevada in an arrangement pre-dating the BLM.Except he didn't. Clark County has already said that he offered them the money and they told him it had to go to the federal government and that they wouldn't take it. They've also said they've never had such an arrangement. They testified to such in court.
I’d like to thank the three of y’all for being the voice of reason and facts on this issue.
EVEN OLE WOODIE GUTHRIE SANG ABOUT IT.....Woody Guthrie was a socialist with Communist leanings. Big union supporter too. When he was singing that, what he really meant was "Da, this is the proletariat's land, comrade!" Not somebody who I'd cite.
Exactly.
Commies get support by proclaiming that individuals own their land, but once they gain power, they collectivize it and proclaim they are acting in the "Peoples' best interests."
However, if I spot a glorious opportunity to use the Left's prose or poetry against them in some way, I'll do it...or, put another way, "the devil made me do it".

So what’s backing the theory that the Feds were actively trying to “persuade” him to stop using the land? The Harry Ried angle has a deadline, not mere annoyance over fees. If they wanted him out, what was the pretext for pushing?
Cliven Bundy wasn't born before his family entered into the 1934 Taylor Grazing Act permit or lease for the old Bunkerton allotment.
After he quit paying grazing fees to the BLM, and the BLM went to court in 1998 to terminate his lease for nonpayment of grazing fees, Cliven Bundy tendered a payment to Clark County for eighteen head of cattle, not the 900-1,100 he was grazing. Clark County rejected the payment because they were not authorized to accept grazing fees on BLM grazing lands.
If you have evidence or specifics on the oft-repeated "pre-dating the BLM" claim, which undercuts the Bundys' "we bought the grazing rights in the late 1880s" claim, I would sincerely be interested in seeing it.

But the rancher who did write it said that in 1993 Mr. Bundy was one of those whose NUMBER OF CATTLE allowed to graze was unfairly, drastically cut. And if the number of cattle using the water rights dropped the water rights (state) would be lost. The cuts would have put him out of business.
The BLM pulled back and might be planning a Midnight raid. Like the Nazis and their “Night and Fog” rule.
