CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa Rep. Paul Ryan is having his I-told-you-so moment.
During a speech here to the Iowa Republican Party, on his second trip back to the Hawkeye State since losing in 2012, Ryan said that one reason he and Republican nominee Mitt Romney couldnt top President Barack Obama was they had to shadow box against big government in theory.
Now, Ryan said, Americans have big government in practice, and the theory is a whole lot different than what it looks like in practice.
We kept trying to say this is what Obamacare is going to do, this is what Dodd-Frank, will do, Ryan said. The challenge was it was sort of our word against theirs. Because they did not put their program in practice yet.
He also said it was a bitter irony that the president proposed cuts to the military the same week Vladimir Putin invaded Ukraine.
Presidential politics is king here, but Iowa is one of the most crucial states in Novembers midterm elections. Sen. Tom Harkins (D-Iowa) retirement gave Republicans one of their best pickup opportunities, and two House seats will be open.
Ryan waded into the contentious Senate race, taking a shot at Democratic candidate Rep. Bruce Braley. At a closed fundraiser, Braley spoke derisively about Sen. Chuck Grassleys (R-Iowa) agricultural background, questioning whether hes qualified to become the chairman of the Judiciary Committee.

He’s a waste of time. He had a chance to make his mark on the national stage and accomplished nothing.
Why a waste of time? Romney was the candidate, not Ryan.
Because it was Paul Ryan himself who AGREED WITH JOE BIDEN that INDEED BUSH WAS RESPONSIBLE for the economic problems ..that Biden and Obama “inherited” a bad situation - so when he did that, he did not even SHADOW BOX against big government in theory, let alone practice.
Ryan lost me at that moment. I never for a moment thought he won that debate with Biden, even tho so many talk radio types and con pundits assured us he did. No, he lost it in the early stages with that idiocy.
1 poor answer in 1 vp debate, in which many people thought he won disqualifies him?
Lol.
Wake up! Did he not co-author the bill that started cutting the Military pensions all while giving freebies to illegals?
How about transgressions against conservatism like this current budget he proposed that keeps spending and supposedly hamstrings future Congresses to do the heavy lifting of cutting, not reducing spending increases? All the while knowing that any future Congress has no restrictions on scrapping his magic beans plan at any time to do a redo and keep the gravy train going.
How many FReepers can add to the list? Your pings list is gonna be very full of examples very soon.
Shallow thinkers shouldn't be LOLing around a forum .it is not becoming. And I don't know what your "disqualify" comment is about disqualify for what? And it wasn't just ONE answer in ONE debate - it was Paul Ryan's biggest moment, and he fed the big lie that turned the election more than any other lie - that BUSH and REPUBLICANS were the problem with the economy. The percentage of people who believe that is almost exactly the percentage of people who voted Obama ..ON THE DING DONG NOSE.
So I stand by my very correct assertion that Ryan and Romney blew the debate about what liberalism would do, because our economy was already proof positive of that in 2012. But they were not man enough to try and fight that fight. They thought they could niche their way to 270 electoral votes simply because Obama was a "nice guy who was over his head" when it came to fixing Bush problems.
Agree. Crazy Joe Biden dominated this clown in the debate. I heard the spin afterwards and I wondered if these people saw the same debate I did.
I don’t like Paul Ryan and won’t vote for the wuss. Even Mitt was a far better candidate than Ryan. Ryan was a bad choice then and he would be in the future.
You and me both ..I was mortified .and wondered as you did what debate did these folks watch?
And as Rush said, when he saw exit polling which confirmed that 53% of voters still blamed Bush for the economy, that it was over. And it was, and that issue is why, and Ryan deserves a lot of blame for that misperception. McCain’s 08 campaign set the stage for it, and Romney-Ryans pathetic strategy cemented it.

Imagine my disappointment when Ryan showed himself to be another namby-pamby, sissy-boy, inside-the-beltway, Unger-In-The-Longest-Yard Republican during the 2012 campaign.
Our next nominee needs to be a Governor (someone with executive experience), someone under 60 years old (no more old farts), and a Tea Party Conservative (wimpy GOP-e's will go along with us if we show them our Pimp Hand).
Paul Ryan is a lightweight mediocre bureaucrat creature who kisses up to the GOPe.
He needs to go away.
Ryan’s love-in with Patty Murray, bless her heart, was reminiscent of Newt Gingrich siting on the sofa with Nancy Pelosi, crooning about the environment. Any “conservative” who displays such poor judgment should automatically be dropped for consideration as presidential material.
He’s really an ‘90s type Dem. His budgets still increase spending and he wants amnesty. The GOP will soon be dead with open borders.
Remember, he did vote for auto and bank bail-outs.
All he’s for is a slower version of Cloward-Piven.
Mitt Romney's a good man. He cares about 100 percent of Americans in this country. And with respect to that quote [Romney's 47% quote], I think the vice president very well knows that sometimes the words don't come out of your mouth the right way.
Paul Ryan the small government candidate who still cannot bring himself to name even one unecessary govt agency he could bear to shut down.
Nothing in a vp debate wins or loses a presidential election. To suggest otherwise is silly.
That debate had nothing to do with the election loss. Zero.
Hardly. Ryan’s apology gave away the 47% issue. It told the Obama team that they could use it against Romney with impunity. And they did.
