Jesse Winchester, an American singer-songwriter who moved to Montreal in the 1960s to dodge the Vietnam War draft, died in his sleep Friday morning at the age of 69 after a lengthy illness.
Born in Louisiana and raised in Tennessee, Winchester developed his musical talent while living in Montreal. He often played at a hotel in Morin Heights, Que., run by several Tennessee transplants during the 1970s.

I had a customer who wrote a book on his Army experiences in the Pacific, and his focus was how the media turned it into a Marine theater, although the Army did the bulk of the fighting.
Many people don’t know that in WWII, the Navy lost more than double the men of the Marine Corps.

I fought the draft for two years, beat them, and then enlisted in the Army, as I had wanted to all along.
I was fine with men who opposed the draft, as a young man I saw it as an issue of individual honor to oppose it or not, but it had to be done by a patriot and for sincere reasons (most of us were teens and 20 years old), I would get very aggressive with guys who were dodging the draft as a part of a lack of patriotism, and would flat out confront and demand removal (from social situations) of a guy who was living outside the U.S to avoid prison.
Once I was in, I started to see the scale of the world, and I changed my perspective on the size of things.
I so loved Reagan and his vision, that I went back into military service during the 1980s.

Jesse Winchester is one of those people that you hear what a great musician and songwriter he was, from other musicians. However, when I searched for “Jesse Winchester songs” a few minutes ago, the list that came up included only two or three I recognized (recorded by Jimmy Buffett), and only one I kind of liked.
If even one guy involved in Nam was a draftee, the entire theory of the thing is invalidated. Where is the logic of sending an American slave army or even an American army in which 25% of the soldiers are slaves, to fight for somebody else's freedom??
WW-II, in my view, was the one conflict in the last century for which a US draft could have been justified and you have to note that a draft was not needed for WW-II, at least not for combat roles. WW-II was a gigantic logistics push operation in which only some small percentage of those in uniform were ever involved in combat.

We saw Winchester perform a couple of years ago. He opened for another act. I really enjoyed his show.
BTW, I don’t hold his conscience against him.

In 2004, the Democrats were pushing the meme that Boosh was "trying to bring back the draft" (literally MTV Viacom was breaking into programming to present "headlines" about this). The only bills to bring back the draft were completely authored by Democrats (in both the House and Senate). Someone tried bringing them to the floor and the Democrat authors even voted against their own bill.
I don't agree with his draft dodging but could not ignore his talent. May he RIP without pain as bladder cancer is a painful way to go.
Honor and treaties have little to do with cold, rational logic. My Dad didn’t consider himself a slave for being drafted; perhaps he was suffering from false consciousness.
Let’s be factual about the Marines’ activities in the fighting in the Pacific in WWII. Those Marines were a very vital part of our winning the war there with their many self sufficient battles. However, I tend to believe the Marines would have it that the many more Army divisions involved were just window dressing as is typical Marine gung-ho stuff. I had an older step brother who was a career Marine going back to the first China-Japan conflicts. When he visited us before WWII he was always spit-and-polish. He did survive WWII. I stand by the sacrifices of all ,the Navy, Marines and Army(including then Air Force) as being of ( The Finest Generation).
The Army did most of the fighting in the Pacific, in fact Army losses in the Pacific are almost exactly the same as the total WWII loses for the Navy and Marines combined, and the global WWII Navy losses were about double of the Marines.
The Army was also using their Indian “Windtalkers” as radio men, in the Pacific, North Africa, and Europe, the Army had invented the concept in WWI.
The media has created a distorted view of the Pacific war.
