With a single phrase of compassion for immigrants in the U.S. illegally, Jeb Bush has prompted questions about his viability as a potential presidential contender and underscored how divisive the immigration issue remains for the Republican Party.
The former Florida governor sparked a conservative furor this week when he described illegal immigration in an interview as an act of love by people trying to provide for their families.
Backing Bush are some of the GOPs most powerful insiders and financiers, who are hoping the party can woo Hispanic voters and rebound from Mitt Romneys damaging self-deportation rhetoric in 2012.
The worst thing that can happen to a political party is not for voters to decide they dont like you, said Alex Castellanos, a GOP consultant and former Romney adviser. Its for voters to decide you dont like them. And thats where the Republican Party is right now.
Other GOP lawmakers and conservative activists, however, are cringing over Bushs remarks, which triggered vocal opposition and concerns about amnesty.

Like Rubio Jeb phrases it like he is being tough on illegals,
‘We cant allow...’
Think he would deport many?
Its for voters to decide you dont like them.”
I agree with you Will, that’s where Jeb is at. I’m glad he said that and cleared things up.
Somebody on the radio(I think it may have been on Rush’s show) posited that perhaps Jeb really doesn’t want the nomination, and is sabotaging himself, either consciously or Unconsciously. To which, Rush replied, “If he doesn’t want it, why not just SAY SO?”
Those that complain about being in shadows give them a window seat on return flight.
The idiot should just make it official and run as a Mexican candidate.
You calling illegals cockroaches, Jeb?
Sounds kind of racist to me, but, hey, whatever you say.
This is a guy who married a Mexican and has been representing Mexicans over Americans ever since.
Someone is bankrolling him I guess. Not the illegals but those who benefit from their being here. Their position is as incoherent a Jeb’s. he’s their spokesman.
Who else have they got?
BO is ruining it for everyone, esp GOPe, who had a good country club arrangement. Not thinking they and the dems are ruining the country so much it would even ruin their deal, but under BO it’s happening fast. Bunch of grifters, Michelle is the perfect image of all of them.
But the Conservatives have the strongest, most coherent position and it is necessary now. The country cannot take any more of this mayhem, and the fight is between those who would grab the last bit before it all crumbles, and those who would build it back.
Dems have Hillary, Maybe John Kerry. Their voters do not care about what’s good for the country. THey don’t care about the rule of law or even natural law and they don’t see two days ahead. THey admire people who are bad and get away with it and they don’t like people being good and virtuous. It makes them feel guilty, expecting them to be good as well, and to work and accept suffering as a part of life.
They think people who are good are hypocrites who just hide their vices more expertly, but won’t share the wealth. BO and the Clintons give their voters a wink and a nod, we’ll get you a house in Oyster bay...
Jeb and the GOPe really are bad, greedy and push the constitution around, and they’ve gotten away with it, but now they’re out of time, support and players.
They have no one to run.
They’d run Bill Clinton if they could. They don’t even need to win the presidency, I’d be surprised if they did want to win it.
But they don’t want a virtuous hard worker, patriotic guy in their any more than the dems do. They’d have to get to work and hide their resources.
Conservatives are moving in. They have to, BO has ruined everything. In three years their won’t even be health care and everyone will owe the government tens of G’s for others’ health care, but there won’t even be any. Boner will be out. Michelle will still be taking multi million dollar trips. But it will be over.
And the only ones who can fix it will be constitutional revivers.
Hillary will be the darling of the amoral
It does not get too much more American than that, unless it is to bail out members in good standing of the big-government/big-corporate crony-fascist complex, or letting the well - connected rip-off artists thieve for years while the guy that does not dot an ‘i’ to a regulator’s liking gets their career and life ruined. Its the new and improved American way! And if you don’t like it, just shut up and pay your taxes, prole!
“The idiot should just make it official and run as a Mexican candidate.”
He married a Mexican national and has dual citizenship so technically he can run for office in Mexico.
If Jeb wants to fix the illegal immigration problem, he should run for office there.
I’m not kidding. Mexico sure needs help. He can take Rubio with him as his chief of staff and McNuts as secretary of defence. This could work.
Since when is it a presidential value to ignore the law, the Constitution.
These people shouldn’t be here in the first place Mr. Bush, but your party, as well as the other liars club allowed it to happen.
Some of the ones with whom I am personally acquainted are nice people and would make great Americans. Many have seriously considered going through the legalization process but wonder what good it would do since they can freely come and go as they please through our open borders and work for cash which they have to pay little, if any, tax on.
Meanwhile, I'm only able to take home about 56 cents of every dollar I earn and our household income is close to, but somewhat less than the national median income.
Holy smokes. I will never pull the lever, ever for this guy.
Ever. I don’t care if it is Satan himself running against him, not doing it.
All of these statements will just drive up illegal immigration from Mexico and Central America, that means hardship and surely worse but good business for cartels and coyotes.

What can we expect when he is married to a Mexican, naturally he’s going to be on their side. NO MORE BUSHES!
Exactly! Well said!
we have to use words that Jeb would understand.
like.....ADIOS JEB
Jeb must be some kind of dope .No one forces these people to stay in the “Shadows”.They do it on their own.
All they have to do is take their Butts back to their country of origin then they won ‘t have to hide or worry about being deported .
Though from what I read about Obama’s aunt,She was here 12 years after she was ordered deported so I guess that’s nothing to really worry about.
Deport Jeb. He loves Mexico so much, send him packing. Never said this before but I may have to decline my right to vote in ‘16.
“it is an American value to uphold the rule of law.”
It is the respect for the rule of law that holds this country together, not culture, race, ethnicity or language.
Most of these illegals have been victims of nations where the rule of law is nonexistent, or at least very selectively administered. The culture is for anyone who gains power to suck out everything they can for themselves and their friends until they are kicked out of office. Then the next groups takes over and does the same thing. This is what makes their native countries so hopeless in the minds of the illegals.
The problem is, they are bringing the same destructive notion of the rule of law to this country. The moment they step on American soil they have demonstrated their own disdain of the rule of law. As they go underground, or as Bush calls it, in the shadows, they operate a lawless system here. The same attitude of “law for thee but not for me” grows here. They are shepherded by coyotes and others who built their own power bases and work hard to keep the people from integrating or seeing the advantages of being legal.
So, as we condone illegal immigration, we are building in this nation a critical mass of people for whom the law means nothing if it is not convenient. The notion that these people will suddenly become ardent supporters of the rule of law once they are legal themselves is ludicrous. The law will continue to be a selective tool for their benefit but not a governing principle.
The rule of law is already being undermined here and has been for generations. Politicians cheat, lie, rescue their friends, deceive and profit from their offices. The so-called upper class has often been perceived as “above the law” that binds the little people. Now we are being urged to accept a lower class that also disrespects lawfulness and that pincer squeeze will destroy the rule of law as more and more of the struggling, honest people see others benefiting from ignoring law, using friends to skirt the law and leaving the consequences and price to those trying to uphold the law.
The center can’t hold as it sees itself bled dry for lawless others. The foundation of our nation will be gone and everyone will wonder what happened as we devolve into a giant banana republic.
