Residents of Saginaw County, Mich. could soon find themselves confronted by a behemoth best suited for the war-torn streets of Afghanistan. According to Sheriff William Federspiel, his department recently obtained a Mine Resistant Ambush Proof (MRAP) vehicle straight from the U.S. Army.

Spare parts will run out sooner or later and the maintanence costs will go through the roof.
It's those dirty Chummy collaborators in Goderich, Kincardine & Obatanga Provincial Park.
Damn them!
>> the Washington government does not approve of Americans setting their police on fire
Americans will not be “setting police on fire”. The federal government is pre-positioning military equipment.
Here is the deal...in simplicity.
Most of these vehicles end up on a gov’t sales listing. Cost is usually ten to forty percent of original cost.
Who buys them? Usually a local or county law enforcement agency who has grant money that is NOT monitored by the city or county commission. If you put this out for a vote....rarely will commissions approve the purchase.
Upon delivery? You discover that you need a driver who is trained and certified (yeah, that cost money)....so you pay for Randy and Joe to go off to Iuka or Del Rio for three days of training.
Then you discover that you need a special mechanic, so Sparky (your police car mechanic) goes to Ohio for ten days of special training (that costs money too).
Then you discover that routine maintenance is tied into the vehicle. Parts, special oil, and special tires. That will cost money.
If you have a full-blown emergency where it’s needed at the other side of the county? Well....you can figure almost an entire tank of gas will be used to get there and back. Figure up around $100 minimum for each trip.
The odds of some idiot taking a curve too fast and flipping it? Well, you have to order the guys to keep the speed at forty on the straight-away, and ten on curves.
What happens when you get it to the “event”? You tend to park in a position so that the local media can image it and put it into the report. Actual usage? Maybe one event out of ten will require it to be pulled in close.
Breakdowns? More than your average vehicle. Cost on the police department? You can figure twenty thousand a year will be spent if you drive it out once a week to some event.
Around twenty years ago...in Phoenix...the local cops ended up with their ‘attack vehicle’ damaging some parked cars, and the county had to pay out tens of thousands for damages.
For the effect that county or city cops gain...they get one interesting add-on. Now that everyone sees things advanced...there’s a need for a heavier type weapon to counter the police-military vehicle. Within ten years....rockets and mortars will be noted by various gangs and criminals. What’s next for the cops? Laser weapons?
That is some real commie hate against veterans and military service for our nation, you got going there.

Who buys them?
You've pretty much nailed it.
States, counties, towns, universities, and non profit organizations, etc., get first dibs on military surplus equipment.
What's left over gets sold in a huge online auction.
That's the source of most military equipment that we, who collect such "relics" use.
You have to know where to shop.
I am not going to announce here where to shop so as not to add even more bidders bidding up the price.
If one is interested enough, one can find it.
BTW, Saturday I should be picking up my second German Army Unimog, another radio van.
Will be using it for emergency and event ham radio.
Search for images of U1300L if you want to see what it looks like.
Not that I’m agreeing with the previous poster, but is there something to the notion of the revolving door between military service and law enforcement employment? Or is it a phenomenon limited only to the ivy league-government-private sector lecture circuit AKA the eastern establishment?
The answer, of course, is obvious: to roll over the corpses of Americans who foolishly believed in the First Amendment.
When I was young I assumed all cops would be veterans, and was surprised to find out that most never served, I don’t know what the percentage is today.
What percentage of the almost 25 million veterans are cops, do you think?
Civil agencies having military equipment for domestic use creates a dynamic, the poster’s attitude is a symptom of that dynamic.
Wow. Because I joined during the Carter administration, rather than during Vietnam (the draft ended when I was 12) I’m a dog-killing, fascist, jack-booted skinhead? Good to know.
“Unstoppable”.
That sounds like a challenge.
I don’t know. If you’ve got numbers I’d appreciate seeing them. The only thing I’ve seen is anecdotal. There is this tidbit from the DOJ, however:
In FY 2012 the COPS Hiring Program (CHP) made available $111 million directly to law enforcement agencies to hire and/or rehire career law enforcement officers for the advancement of public safety through an increase in their community policing capacity and crime prevention efforts. Grantees that received 2012 CHP grant funding for new hire positions were required to hire a new officer who is a post-9/11 military veteran.
Under FY 2013 CHP, new hire officer positions are not required to be military veterans, as under FY 2012 CHP. However, as the COPS Office supports the Attorney General’s commitment to hiring military veterans whenever possible, applicants who committed to hiring or rehiring at least one military veteran under CHP received additional consideration for FY 2013 CHP funding.
If one considers the prevalence of the deployment of MRAPS to small town police and county sheriff’s departments it seems reasonable to assume that those said departments would sign up for additional grant money requiring the hire of veterans. For them what’s the downside? Get money and they hire pre-trained supposedly competent individuals. At the least it establishes a hiring preference. It does beg the question if the purchase of MRAPS is as prevalent as we think outside of the FR fishbowl.
I’ve met some who’ve served and some who haven’t. It is a mixed bag. The ultimate question is however: Does the hiring of veterans as cops poses to us a risk as we think MRAPS do? I can only speculate. There are veterans who just need a job; who feel obligated to continue their service in some capacity; or those on a power trip who got off kicking in doors in the sandbox.
We also have to consider the quality of recruits going into the service. We have to examine our own understanding of things. If what we say here on FR is true and patriotic Americans are being purged from the armed forces in favor of PC homosympathizers with a fascistic streak then one could only conclude that there is cause for concern when they enter the military-LEO pipeline.
” These skinheads we keep thanking for your service are merely doing a job they joined up for and coming home and shooting our dogs.”
I am?
Since when?
Thank you for your service. /s
I note the sarc tag.
Your disrespect is dishonorable, and speaks of an all encompassing ignorance.
Nice broad brush smear you made against all servicemembers.
Did you know that Jim served?
Ping to some of the military and former military types.
Did you know, Carl from Marietta says in post 16 “ These skinheads we keep thanking for your service are merely doing a job they joined up for and coming home and shooting our dogs.”
We’re all dog murdering psychopaths in his eyes!
BBQ at his place, bring beer!
That’s funny. You and my VERY FAR-LEFT Aunt in New Jersey are on exactly the same page. Do you also believe that I and my compatriots are war criminals, Rand, er, I mean Carl?
