Liberals set to form majority Quebec government (Socialists Crushed Alert)

Quebec's Liberal Party is set to form a majority provincial government, routing a bid by Quebec's main separatist party for their own majority.

Liberals have won 41% of the vote, with nearly all ballots counted.

Parti Quebecois (PQ) leader Pauline Marois has resigned in response to the crushing defeat, with her party only obtaining 25%.

She dissolved the PQ-led minority government last month, after coalition partners blocked the party's agenda.

Liberal leader Philippe Couillard will now become the province's premier.

The election centred on PQ's controversial Charter of Values, which would ban public employees from wearing religious items, and a revivial of the debate over Quebec's possible independence from Canada.

Quebec's separatist socialist PQ got decisively routed by the right-center Liberals in today's Quebec provincial election. They will form a majority government.

My heartfelt congratulation to the Liberals on their win tonight!

The provincial party has nothing in common with the federal Liberal Party of Canada, which is center-left. They have the same name but follow different political philosophies - and this is significant in francophone Quebec.

Can’t the Francophiles just withdraw to the two French Islands in the St. Lawrence?

Quebec francophones appear to be becoming more like English Canadians in outlook. They have had their fill of the siren song of separatism and the socialist bilge. They want to remain in Canada.

"They want to remain in Canada."

Well, that's progress. I remember in the 70's when my Dad was potentially facing a move to Que. for work. It didn't sound good for a fam move.

**************

Or it is just the historical and correct use of the word, such as the Founders would have recognized. George Herbert Walker Bush turned the word into an epithet when he ran against the hapless Gov. Dukakis.

Of course... its still the “beautiful province” when all it said and done. Here is my tribute to it, the land of my birth:

O Québec
De la montagne à la Saint-Laurent
Des vallées de l’océan
Restez béni belle province!
Dieu brille sur tes merveilles
Sur vos lacs, les rivières et la neige de l’Arctique!
Vos villes et la langue d’or
Les lys de France ne se décolore pas de votre vue
Adorez votre beauté dans la chaleur du soleil
Votre splendeur révélé à la lumière de la lune
O Québec
Restez béni belle province!

Frankly I thought all the Quebecois were on Fort Lauderdale Beach, at least it seemed that way the last time I was there.

Funny, those islands are ruled by France!

Fitting 7 million people on two small islands is a challenge.. ;-)

Very interesting story about those islands during WWII. The Free French seized the islands from the Vichy Government, and FDR was none too happy about it.

Always wanted to visit Quebec City, it’s about as “European” a city as there is in North America.

Montreal is the largest French-speaking city in the world after Paris.

I and William Shatner have the honor of being born there.

So will Pauline Marois and Kim Campbell hang out now? They have a lot in common after all.

Honestly I can’t tell if the PQ lost so badly because their candidates couldn't resist talking about another referendum, or just because their campaign was generally so awful. My only regret is that it drove everybody back to the Liberals and looks like it cost the CAQ seats.

The CAQ came in a respectable third and its also a center-right party.

Now the sovereigntists ran an awful campaign and Ms. Marois was simply unlikeable - she got beaten for re-election in her own riding and led the PQ to its worst showing ever... it lost over half of its seats and she was one of the casualties.

This is good news for the Tories as they head into a federal general election in October 2015.

I hope you're right. And I just read a piece in the Globe & Mail about Liberal leader Couillard not being so great - so maybe there's hope for the future.
