UConn’s Napier: ‘We do have hungry nights’ (College athlete unions)
CT Mirror ^ | 4/7/2014 | Jacqueline Rabe Thomas

Shabazz Napier, point guard for The University of Connecticut's men's basketball team, recently told reporters he understands why athletes at Northwestern need a union, as he sometimes has to go to bed "starving" because he cannot afford food.

"We as student athletes get utilized for what we do so well. We are definitely best to get a scholarship to our universities, but at the end of the day, that doesn't cover everything. We do have hungry nights that we don't have enough money to get food and sometimes money is needed," the senior told reporters. "I think, you know, Northwestern has an idea, and we'll see where it goes."

He goes to bed hungry because he’s so out of touch with real life he doesn’t know he can gorge himself on Ramen noodles for less than 50¢.

I call BS on this, these players see only one thing about the Union money; $$$$$! They will make a case that they need money for living expense. what they really want is money! Even if the NCAA allows the schools to give them money, it will never be enough!

Shabazz, just be careful!

Don’t go out on a rainy night to get some skittles and drank, just because you’re hungary.

Maybe part time jobs would be helpful

Scholarship athletes are barred from earning more than $2,000 by the NCAA. That won't go very far. While it is true that some larger schools have training tables for their athletes, smaller schools, like those in Division II (which can have up to 36 scholarship players in football) sometimes don't.

It can be very rough on athletes at those levels, who have little chance at the pros and who are using their scholarships to earn degrees that will help them live after sports are done.

This really isn't about some kid that's too dumb to figure out how to feed himself with the free food he has access to.

The larger point is that they are pushing the ludicrous concept of "unions" for college athletes.

How do the athletes force concessions from management, strike?

Does management counter by replacing them and terminating their scholarships

Since they get free food and tuition, what exactly is the "union" going to negotiate for them?

If the athletes are broke, how the hell are they going to pay union dues?
