Pro-Russians Storm Ukraine Government Buildings

(KIEV, Ukraine) — Crowds of pro-Russian demonstrators stormed government buildings Sunday in two major cities in eastern Ukraine, where secessionist sentiment has sparked frequent protests since Ukraine’s Russia-friendly president was ousted in February.

In Luhansk, 30 kilometers (20 miles) west of the Russian border, hundreds of people surrounded the local headquarters of the security service and later scaled the facade to plant a Russian flag on the roof.

In Donetsk, to the southwest, a large group of people surged into the provincial government building and smashed windows. A gathering of several hundred, many of them waving Russian flags, then listened to speeches delivered from a balcony emblazoned with a banner reading “Donetsk Republic.”

Eastern Ukraine was the heartland of support for Viktor Yanukovych, the president who fled to Russia in February after months of protests. About half of the region’s residents are ethnic Russians, many of whom believe Ukraine’s acting authorities are Ukrainian nationalists who will oppress Russians.

Ukraine’s interim authorities deny they are infringing the rights of the ethnic Russian population and accuse Moscow of trying to sow instability. Russia has moved large contingents of troops to areas near the Ukrainian border, and speculation is strong that unrest in eastern Ukraine could be used as a pretext for a Russian incursion.

Phase II has begun. Putin no doubt wants a contiguous land bridge to connect Russia to Crimea. Agitation by Russophiles in eastern Ukraine is the first step. However will Putin again deploy the Russian army and force the West to impose mutually destructive sanctions? Will the Ukraine fight to defend it sovereignty or will NATO support it and risk war? Will Ukraine and Russia negotiate a debt for land swap? Should the US be involved or even care?

No need for a “land bridge.” Crimea is less than a mile from mainland Russia.

Also Sunday, authorities in Ukraine said they found the body of a kidnapped journalist who played an active role in protests that led to Yanukovych’s ouster. The body was found in a forest about 150 kilometers (60 miles) outside the capital, Kiev.

Cherkassk province prosecutors said Vasily Sergiyenko was abducted in his home city of Korsun-Shevchenkivskyi on Friday evening and later murdered. The nationalist Svoboda party, of which Sergiyenko was a member, said the reporter was found with stab wounds and signs of beatings to his head and knees.

Oh dear, the MSM will be upset about this.

Why would it need to be Spetnaz? The region voted over 90% for Yanukovich; do you think they would WANT to be part of the new EU-controlled Ukraine? How’d that work out for Spain, Greece, Italy, etc.?

Have the pro-Russians thrown any firebombs at the cops like the Obama/Soros/sodomite EU mobs did in Kiev? Has the Kiev junta ordered the police and military not to touch the pro-Russians like the rump parliament in Kiev ordered the police and military not to touch the Obama/Soros/sodomite EU firebomb throwers.

There are many who do not trust Kiev.

If Kiev won’t move to a federal solution, the country will break up.

Yanuckovich was elected promising integration with the EU so your point doesn't necessarily follow.

Polls show most folks even in eastern Ukraine don't want to be part of Russian.

If I was in Ukraine I would be pro independent from Russia and from the EU.

To steal from Dylan...."It may be the EU, or it may be Russia, but you've got to serve somebody."

Ukraine will never be fully independent in that sense.

That's debatable but if I had to choose between the two tyrannies I would choose the less centralized, softer more inept tyranny, the EU.

What kind of federalization? the one that Russia wants for Ukraine (each region in Ukraine to have its own domestic AND foreign policy) or the one that Russia practices at home, where every single meaningful dicision is made in Moscow.

Pro Russian demonstrators seven days ago,...

My question: where are the masks, firebombs, tire bonfires, vandalized buildings and bodies?
