Milley said the soldier opened fire with a .45-caliber Smith & Wesson semiautomatic pistol that was purchased recently but was not authorized to be brought on the post. Well then, it's obvious all that is needed is another gun control law,

Back when I was in service (1956-1960) there were several of the enlisted men who kept a sidearm in their lockers. Not out of intent of intimidating their fellow soldiers, but to bring to a screeching halt any outbreaks of threats of violence by others.
It was probably illegal back then, too, but disputes inside the barracks were a very rare thing.

Bull. The sense of safety has been eroding since 2008.
The troops know the administration does not have their back.
I believe the second amendment applies to soldiers too, but if they don't want to arm everybody who so chooses on a base, at least arm a core of certified, trusted and trained soldiers and personnel so at least someone can mount an IMMEDIATE defense in case of a crazy person or terrorist attack.
I'm sure the military are capable of figuring out how to do that.

This Ahole has the nerve to say their sense of safety has been broken?
He just said, ‘ANOTHER ONE OF HIS MISSIONS HIS HAS BEEN ACCOMPLISHED!
They need help spiritually, mentally, medically, and economically, especially when they come home from fighting a battle with rubber bullets.
If this administration would treat our military right, they wouldn’t feel their ‘sense of safety was broken.’
Only a few elected people can carry? They have no way of defending themselves.

A Quick Reaction Force of trusted always-armed soldiers would provide an immediate response. Excellent idea!

When did they make this base an arms-free zone? Under Obama?I could be mistaken, but I think it was Clinton who actually started the whole "gun-free zone" thing at military bases. I'm sure someone else here knows and will correct or confirm...

Its been going on for years...20+?? Maybe Much longer than that. I think Americans have this skewed view of how firearms are stored and used on military installations. The "From Here To Eternity" days of rifle racks in open bay barracks and ammo in the supply room is long gone.
Every unit that has weapons assigned to it has an arms room that has strictly controlled access. Ammunition is drawn from an ammunition supply point located on the installation that is usually not conducive to ready access. Ammunition draws for training are planned and coordinated months in advance, for example. Small amounts of ammunition may be stored in a unit's arms room for specific missions (ie...guard duty) and is strictly controlled.
I'm not saying it is the right way to operate under the current environment, and I think some common sense changes on those procedures are long overdue, but that is the reality. It's been this way for as long as I can remember.
I suspect it will go the other way, however. Stricter control over our military via some expansion of DHS on military installations to "protect" them from themselves. Just another way to diminish the effectiveness of our military and expand the police state. Never let a good crisis go to waste.
