The Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) has detected a distress signal in the southern Indian Ocean near Antarctica as the search for debris from Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 continues.
The emergency beacon came from a fishing vessel and the nature of the distress call is unknown.
AMSA said: "The beacon is located about 3,241km south-west of Perth and 648km north of the Antarctic mainland."
Two aircraft have been deployed to the area where the signal originated, and it will take at least five hours for planes to reach the location.

Nutcase.
Remember the episode “Good Night Sweet Skipper” where they tried hypnotizing the Skipper so he could remember how to turn the Radio into a transmitter..classic episode
I am, perhaps, not as cynical as you.
I don’t think the nefarious ones are necessarily the US Government.
That being said, if the nefarious ones dump bodies, luggage and seat cushions in the south India Ocean, the alert level drops precipitously.
Eliminating an existing flight and substituting the “vanished” airframe loaded with whatever evil (explosives, nerve gas, whatever) becomes a possibility.
We have a patient and determined foe. One who is capable of attempting to blow up the WTC and failing (in 1993, remember?) and continuing over nearly a decade to achieve that goal.
My bet is that we won’t be the target, as obama is already actively working to support the most radical islamist side in any conflict.
My bet is the 777 will be modified as a dam buster and used on the Three Gorges Dam, as China is not showing proper obeisance to the uighurs...
ooooh maybe a nice hollyweird movie remake The Uighur Sanction
That was a classic. Heh.
You completely discount the possibility that the Antarticans shot it down.
PLEEEASE! I think it's quite obvious that it was the Romulans!
My guess is a nuke/EMP over Israel.
It could have been an accidental activation of an EPIRB or an actual boat in distress signal. The frequency would tell them it is not from an airplane. (EMERGENCY POSITION INDICATING RADIOBEACON) - Tom
Let me clarify that.
You could carry an 406 MHZ EPIRB on an airplane, but the last I heard Flight 370 didn't have any.
That seems odd since you would expect to have one in a life raft aboard the plane. -Tom
Yes. It has nothing to do with the plane. Referencing the plane in an article about an emergency beacon from a fishing boat in the same ocean is like mentioning a Japanese citizen that stepped on a sea urchin while talking about a shark attack off California.
“Is CNN going berserk?”

Does anyone, other then fellow travelers, even watch them?
I found a snipe in my backyard yesterday. It had a styrofoam cup in it's mouth.

Maybe it’s a container with mac daddies ba**s inside.
Remember Benghazi and how the truth was buried by the administration to avoid the political fallout. If the fate of Malaysian plane is ever discovered, will we be told? News is infinitely more abundant and infinitely less reliable than it was 150 years ago.
Good point. After all, if the plane got too close to the secret UFO base down there, then they.....er, I mean.....nevermind.....there's no UFO base there.....no, there isn't.....forget that I said anything.
They’re alive!
The bad news is they’ve lived on airline food for three weeks. The good news is they ran out.
Less than 500 miles from Antarctica with a distress call can’t be any sort of good news for the fishing boat. At best simply Dead in the water broke down issue. At worse some catastrophic failure causing it to take on water faster than it’s pumps can handle. Five hours before a plane can get there if they can even drop any gear that could help them. GOD be with them.
You rock.
