Back in 1985 a group of five men sat down and decided to do something about the abuses of power by the State government and police chiefs of Portland, Biddeford, Windham, Bangor and Augusta concerning the issuing of license to carry concealed weapons. Two years later those who voted, voted overwhelmingly to change the wording of Article one section 16 to read Every citizen has a right to keep and bear arms and this right shall never be questioned. One of the goals of this change was to allow concealed carry with no license required, as is done in Vermont.
Unfortunately, but predictably, the Legislature started passing laws and restrictions and the courts upheld them.
Two of the other items that came out of that meeting back in 1985, the Maine State Militia and the Maine secession from the Union movement.
The remaining items that came out of that meeting need not be addressed now and hopefully never will have to be.
