“due to the movement of a satellite in its orbit”
I thought these were geostationary satellites. Maybe he misspoke and meant the movement of the aircraft?
They are geostationary. They are in orbit (moving) around the Earth, but follow the movement of the Earth so they remain over the same spot. The planes are moving in relation to the Earth and to the satellite.
Man, nobody does hard math like the Brits
The very first use of (low earth orbiting) satellites for search and rescue was proven by ham radio operators in the 1970s and 80s using doppler shift measurements. This led to the development of SARSAT/COSPAS. In this case, it’s the plane that did the moving but physics is physics.
I know you can measure “Dopplar” but, assumed they had already done so.
It shouldn’t have taken this long.
That it did seems suspect to me.
What is even more suspect is some former military guy, running his mouth on FoxNews all weekend, claiming “his sources” “confirms” plane landed in Paw Kee Stain.
Boo Chitter.
No better than the hapless and flacid speaking expert they had on this morning.
Apparently they didn’t take into account manmade global warming, so how can the results be taken seriously???
Doppler effect
I thought of that the first day. They should have asked me.
After this incident I am sure that they are going to beef up the system of satellite “pinging” to track aircraft. And probably remove the “off” button from all transponders.
So what they are saying, in effect, is that they have zero idea where it actually is and zero idea what actually happened to it.
Someone alert CNN so they can go wall to wall with this for the next 200 years...
Maybe I’m being too much of a stickler here, but shouldn’t we wait until the plane is actually found before we start bragging about the technology’s success?
Just a thought.
This is so confusing to me..
Just some positive PR for Inmarsat (not that they don't deserve it) together with an appeal for government mandating of better tracking.
