I blame American Idol and the rest — the people who hit it big are women with enormous voices who are backed by bands that provide almost no more than a throb. It’s as close to A Capella as you can get without completely getting rid of the musicians. Adelle, Rhianna, Lord, etc. I suppose they have some degree of vocal talent, but they do not produce a product that I find appealing.

Musicians are expensive - DJ's and backing tracks are cheap. :)

I agree. What’s worse is they can go though the whole Idol (or X Factor) competition without ever having to demonstrate they can write a song. Meanwhile the judges go on and on about being an “artist”. Artists write their own music! Singers that sing only other people’s music are technicians, not artists. They should have at least one week where the contestants have to sing an original song.

American Idol contestants are judged based primarily on talent. This is to their credit.
Some of this crap coming out of hip hop is absolutely stupid.
