”The Graduate” was a sleeper. Mike Nichols’ film of Dustin Hoffman’s star performance and Buck Henry’s script took over a year to grow on audiences, but it became one of Hollywood’s greatest moneymakers. I know people who saw it well over a hundred times. It offered the Baby Boomers a vicarious chance to get back at their GI Generation parents when Benjamin Braddock slugged Elaine’s father at the church. Some eight years later, I was to live just down the block from that church in La Verne, CA.
