“I don’t think there is much doubt which way this vote is going anyway.”

Not the shadow of a doubt.

61% of the population are ethnic Russians and 79% declare Russian as their mother tongue. 98% of the population speak Russian, which the official language in Crimea.

Life might be better under Putin—More jobs—more support for army-Navy. There may be a bright spot for the area—I believe there are good reasons to vote for Russian Union.

Kosovo didn't border the US or offer an all weather port either.

So what? Back in the era of the European empires, the British especially would use local conflicts such as this as a method of adding to their empire. The US wasn't involved in the former Yugoslavia for economic or territorial gain.

The ballot asks two questions and leaves no option for a “no” vote. Voters are simply asked to check one of two boxes:

Do you support joining Crimea with the Russian Federation as a subject of Russian Federation?

And:

Do you support restoration of 1992 Crimean Constitution and Crimea’s status as a part of Ukraine?

That Constitution declares that Crimea is an independent state.

No we were interested in establishing a Wahhabist base for our Saudi “friends” in Europe.

So what?

Back in the era of the European empires, nuclear weapons weren't available.

Question—What will Ukraine do? Will they attack? Crack down on Russians not living in Criemea? Will they re-arm? Will they cut the gas pipes? Try to cut off Criemea in some way? The ball is now in their court. Today and tomorrow are the most important time for Russia—Ukraine, the world. Fighting could become the spark that could set off the whole of Europe and the world.

More hope and change. So glad Bush is gone; the world only had conflict happen because Bush made everyone hate the United States.
So glad things are different now.

They will not cut the gas pipes - the Soviets began snatching that infrastructure yesterday. They will not be given time to rearm. They have no means of cutting off the Crimea. They were hosed by their trust of the West, much as the Czechs were.

Correct - except they’re 2 hours behind Russia (Moscow) time. Russia no longer uses Daylight Savings Time, and we’re currently 4 hrs ahead of GMT here in Moscow, 9 hrs ahead of EST and 2 hrs ahead of Crimea, which is (for now) running on Ukrainian time.

are you proud of what NATO did in Kosovo?

and since you are thinking in analogies, how many Americans live in Kosovo, to justify the unprovoked US bombing of Serbia? you know that, don’t you? The entire Russian case rests on the fact that Russians live in Crimea and they’d rather live under Russian rule than of a werternized Ukraine...

And since you mentioned, show me the pictures of Kiev bombed by Russians. Because the Americans did bomb Serbia in 1999, don’t you remember? If you think Kosovo and ZCrimea are comparble, please show me evidence that Americans were the majority of Kosovo’s population in 1999 and show me images of Kiev bombed by the Russians today.

“Life might be better under Putin—More jobs—more support for army-Navy. There may be a bright spot for the area—I believe there are good reasons to vote for Russian Union.”

Not to mention that the money Russia paid to Ukraine for the navy base lease, will go now to Crimea budget.

My point went over your head, I see. If what we did in Kosovo is wrong then what Russia did in Ukraine is wrong. If what Russia did in Ukraine is right, then Kosovo shouldn’t bother you at all.

Borders have shifted in that neck of the woods for centuries...Best thing is to allow the Ukrainians and Russians to work it out amongst themselves.
