In an interview with Vocativ.com, Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) expressed a desire for factions within the Republican Party to “agree to disagree” on hot-button social issues so that the GOP tent may expand to include more young people and alternative viewpoints.
Asked whether the general consensus at last week’s Conservative Political Action Conference was that the party must butt out of social issues, Paul replied:
I think that the Republican Party, in order to get bigger, will have to agree to disagree on social issues. The Republican Party is not going to give up on having quite a few people who do believe in traditional marriage. But the Republican Party also has to find a place for young people and others who don’t want to be festooned by those issues.
Paul maintained that his own view of gay marriage is one that allows the states to make decisions based on local mores, while the federal government “ought to take a neutral position” on the tax and benefit issues that arise from marriage.
The libertarian-leaning senator’s comments about the GOP echoes that of former Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels who, in 2011, suggested the party ought to call for a “truce” on social issues in order to focus on the economic recession.
His comments were immediately rebuked by social conservative types likes former Gov. Mike Huckabee and former Sen. Rick Santorum.
Sen. Paul will likely face similar criticism, as certain conservatives eye the 2016 primaries and continue the push to rally the base and distance themselves from each other in unique ways.

Paul and Christie have both disqualified themselves for 2016. The door is wide open for a guy like Cruz to come through.
In other words, Conservatives have to compromise with libertarians. No thanks.
And just WHAT issue would He want to start at. Duh, I think not peddle your crap somewhere else.
They have to focus on the constitution. social issues are not up to the president. If the president chooses USSC judges based on conservative and constitutional values, the rest will bear itself out.
Small government does not involve itself in social issues.
Rand Paul is flailing about. He is not presidential, He can’t be serious about a run.

They should take a lesson from the libs. They never care about the 53% but they secretly have to , because they need them. So they have the media for the middle of the road lofos and cheat the rest.
Conservatives can win only if they pitch conservative values to the lofos. And they can only do so if they believe in them, otherwise their on the losing end of a liberal campaign, as usual.
You have to believe in something, or else you just become a lukewarm version of the Democrat Party (or Satan’s Party) - deserving to be spewed out. There is no doubt that the Sodomites, the Abortionists, the Pornographers, Hollywood, flock to support the Democrats — but you really don’t want your ‘tent’ to get that large...

CONSERVATIVES - HOLD THE LINE!!
We are and always have been right on the social issues. In Pro-Life issues we have been winning because of the truth getting out as to the horrific act. We have been able to work around the media activists.
Same sex marriage is the same thing - the deathstyle of homosexual sex acts is documented and even on the Executive branch CDC website.
Conservatives need to keep hammering home the taking of life for the pro-life issue and the HIV/AIDS effect on the same sex marriage issue.
It’s true what they say... “The nut don’t fall far from the tree.”
More and more Rand is taking direct cues from her father. And that ain’t good.
I don’t care about expanding the party, only about winning elections. Pick your battles.
One cannot call a truce when the opposition is constantly on the march. Paul is wearing thin on me lately. He’s looking to be somewhat co=opted by Washington think. What it takes is someone who can articulate a reasonable position on gay marriage, abortion and others, and avoid being sucked into the position as out of step. The fact is these are 50/50 issues. Present reasonable solutions such as civil unions for both homosexual and hetero couples who want the government-provided services and legal rights, and stay out of the marriage business. Stay strong that abortion laws at present includes killing babies who can live on their own, that there are three parties in a pregnancy, especially in the last trimester...mom, dad and baby and all have a right to life. The left treats a baby at 8.5 months as tissue and not a human who can survive on their own, and push back on the far left on this issue. Go on the offensive in calm reasonable statements and combat the far left, who are radically out of the norm.

So they think they can get bigger by alienating 60%+ of their base and hoping for a few stray Democrats to cross over for no real reason.

That is why we are in this mess. Always a compromise and no stand on decency and truth and virtue and honor. Wake-up Americans we are on our way to one huge disaster.

My clothes are absolutely thread bare from Rand Paul’s positions on things such as Amnesty rubbing them the wrong way.
OTOH, my Ted Cruz clothes remain in perfect condition and pristine. How refreshing!
But if you care about winning elections, you might want to expand the party.
Obamacare was a huge gift to Republicans, but the Democrats don't make those sorts of political mistakes very often.
One of the biggest things holding back Republicans politically is the idea that they want some national theocracy. That's unfair, but something must be done to tell the rest of the country that Republicans can handle differences of opinion on social issues.
I think for Rand Paul that means letting states decide what their mores will be and de-nationalizing social issues.
The problem with the Republican party is that they don’t even know what their voter base stands for. Conservatives are not going to give up their principles, and LIBERALS ARE NOT GOING TO VOTE FOR REPUBLICANS ANYWAY, no matter how hard you try to appease them. Don’t you get it?
