Here is a handy range chart that you may find interesting.

Having an Iranian passport really limits which countries will give you a visa, especially if you haven’t travelled much. And, there can be rather long wait to get a visa to anywhere in europe, even if you get one.
So, getting a visa to anywhere out of Iran, especially somewhere you may have (or think you may make) some sort of a connection, can be the 1st step in trying to emigrate or seek asylum in a european country.

I was going off a report I read yesterday(or the day before) that stated the plane carried enough fuel for 2300 mile trip.

However, with your info in hand I went back and looked up the distance from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing, 2700 miles(2340 nautical miles). So it seems the report I read stating 2300 miles of fuel was probably inaccurate.

In other words, you may be right that the plane was carrying enough fuel to get to Somalia. And now I’m recalling the report that one of those that boarded looked like the soccer star, Mario Balotelli.

Obviously there’s probably much more the authorities know that they aren’t letting on to at this time.

“Do we know the pilot’s names?”

Exactly...it would take two to do that tango.

They likely had enough fuel to reach Beijing with a bit extra for emergencies just to save costs. Let’s say that it was enough go-go juice for 3,000nm. If they were flying with a full fuel load, then they would have a helluva range.

Sounds like we’re about to find the plane.

It would take more than two to pull this off. In addition to the pilots being involved, a fairly large team would be required to control the passengers.

I think, if the plane was diverted and if it landed intact (two HUGE ifs), the only purpose it can possibly have is as a cruise missile.

Like the plot in Debt of Honor, approaching aircraft from out of CONUS are not “already in the system”, like AA 11 was on 9/11. They have to be accepted, and if they replace a real, expected flight and can spoof the electronic ID, they can get quite close to LAX, JFK, or IAD without causing a scramble.

I do not know if measures have been put in place after 9/11 to prevent a Debt of Honor attack.

Hopefully, there’s wreckage and they find it soon.

This might very well turn out to be the largest ‘kidnapping for ransom’ crime to date.

I’ve been thinking about that book for the last two days. It’s been awhile since I’ve read it, and I don’t remember the particulars.

But needless to say, as bad as it sounds, I’m in agreement with your last sentence.

We could spend a couple hours googling and finding viable landing strips.

I haven’t read about any bounties, but I’m sure they exist.

Hah! I happened to be looking up related info, and you are right when you say HOURS, but for one, the Maldives have 3 ‘official’ paved runways over 1500 meters, 2 of which are over 2400 meters.

Thanks for posting the link. Interesting in that, a fully loaded 777-200 could reach many unfriendly Islamo countries.

The key is that a pilot kills his co-pilot in a transport aircraft at Vancouver, BC, flies to IAD, declares an emergency approaching the ILS and requests Andrews, and from there wide open it’s 30 seconds to the Capitol.
