'Windy' Davis Loses Half of Border Counties to Pro-Life Democrat

Texas Democratic gubernatorial hopeful 'Windy' Davis woke to some unsettling numbers along the Texas/Mexico border today. Of the 14 counties along the Rio Grande, Davis lost seven—including heavily Hispanic Webb and Hidalgo Counties. Davis Challenger Reynaldo “Ray” Madrigal’s prediction may have come true to an extent—Wendy has a pro-life Catholic problem and may not hold the support of motivated Latino voters by default. Based on unofficial vote tallies by county, Davis lost to Madrigal by substantial gaps in Webb, Zapata, Starr and Hidalgo Counties while managing to fall flat in three lesser populated jurisdictions along the western portion of the border.

Madrigal argued in February, “The majority of Texans are tired of Republicans being in office for 16 years and they don’t see 'Windy' Davis as a leader, especially Catholics,” to a Lubbock newspaper. “But it’s just not Catholics, it is Baptists and people of other religions. They don’t support abortion, and 'Windy' Davis is an abortion candidate.”

According to campaign finance filings with the Texas Ethics Commission, Madrigal claimed $0 in contributions or expenditures in January 2014. In January and February, Davis spent over $26,000.

Texas’ new voter ID law did not appear to be a problem in southern border counties as well. Webb County Elections Administrator Oscar Villarreal touted his 95% Hispanic electorate’s increased voter turnout compared to 2010. Webb, a county with a 30.6 poverty rate, demonstrates a potential hole in the Holder Justice Department’s case that Texas’ voter ID law harms economically vulnerable voters.

Oh I very much agree. I’m just suggesting this is where Rove is getting his nutty ideas.

Very true but them like older conservative Americans are dying off.
Younger Hispanics are not like the older, wiser generations.

I saw a bumper sticker: We Want Wendy
When you say it outloud FAST: It sounds like the goon on Popeye... We were laughing yesterday.

The Houston Chronicle carried a story with news that the last abortion clinic in the Rio Grande Valley and the East Texas belt from the Gulf of Mexico up to the Piney Woods had both closed their doors permanently due to their inability to meet the health care requirements of the new abortion law passed in special session last summer under Gov. Rick Perry.

You may remember that bill (which withstood the scrutiny of the U.S. 5th Circuit Court of Appeals) as the one Wendy Davis initially stopped the first time with her filibuster. In special session, Davis and the Pro-Evil side could not muster the tactics to stop it again.

What struck me was the photo the Chronicle showed with the news story. It was Davis in the Senate with her arms raised in victory. How ironic and misleading. The Chron was using the event of a news story which resulted from Davis’ political failure to somehow portray her to readers as some sort of champion who had accomplished something. She didn’t accomplish any more than an Occupy Wall Street rally shuts down a building for a few hours.

Except in Ann Arbor, where they think Dingell is Jesse Helms.

And Windy was only able to delay this baby-saving bill because David “The Doofus” Dewhurst couldn’t manage the clock during her little filly-buster. No one should ever forgive him for that...and should make sure to vote for his conservative opponent, Dan Patrick, in the May 27th runoff.y

Yeah, cause all that 'prosperity' and 'security' really sucks...

The race for the Dingell throne is going to be an interesting race.

Debbie Dingell is a long time hard left big 3 DC lobbyist who wants to make that seat remain in Dingell hands for a full century. Her GOP opponent is a true blue collar UAW Ford employee who has been at war with his own union and was a mover and shaker behind RTW in Michigan.

The ground is shifting in that district.

It takes more than being pro life to be a conservative. The border counties are still largely democrat.

Yeah, if they identify as dems, when it comes down to it, and the choice is a pro-life, anti amnesty conservative (assuming one gets that far), and liberal dem, they will pick the one that allows them to break the law and not assimilate every time.

meh, who are they going to vote for? Not a republican.

I looked at some of our county returns after the march 4th vote. I found several counties in south Texas that had 0 republican votes. None, Nada, zippo, zilch.

Wendy wins everything south of San Antonio. It’s going to be close people...I hope I’m as wrong as I can be, but I don’t think so

This race is over. The Dems know it and the national party is already moving funds to other places (such as GA Senate). If Abbott doesn’t win by 15% (he won in 2010 by 30%), I will be shocked. No poll has shown the race to be remotely close (and here’s a set of polls from a Democrat-leaning site):
http://www.ourcampaigns.com/RaceDetail.html?RaceID=741457

Not a single Democrat on the board predicts Davis will win, not a one.

Whats a pro-life democrat? More like pro-lie... they speak with the mouth but vote with the twisted arm. Does Bart Stupak ring a bell anyone?

I prefer to be pessimistic and not get over confident.

Dems can’t win, but they are already trying to cheat. It’s never over till it’s over.

Next up to bat the Rats will try to dig up some dirt on Abbott-—he’s a homophobe, racist, sexist, drunkard, had illicit affair, didn’t pay a parking ticket on time—ya know the usual crapola from hades they like to pull up from their cesspools.

No reason to be pessimistic at all in this race. The Dems could scarcely have nominated a worse candidate. Scum like Davis might pull this crap in Massachusetts where they elect liars and criminals, but statewide in Texas ? Ain’t happening.

Site only had Abbott winning by 10%. Win is a win, but it’s to close for me and bodes ill for the future.

Texas flips blue or purple, the power block of the south is broken
