'Windy' Davis Loses Half of Border Counties to Pro-Life Democrat

Texas Democratic gubernatorial hopeful 'Windy' Davis woke to some unsettling numbers along the Texas/Mexico border today. Of the 14 counties along the Rio Grande, Davis lost seven—including heavily Hispanic Webb and Hidalgo Counties. Davis Challenger Reynaldo “Ray” Madrigal’s prediction may have come true to an extent—Wendy has a pro-life Catholic problem and may not hold the support of motivated Latino voters by default. Based on unofficial vote tallies by county, Davis lost to Madrigal by substantial gaps in Webb, Zapata, Starr and Hidalgo Counties while managing to fall flat in three lesser populated jurisdictions along the western portion of the border.

Madrigal argued in February, “The majority of Texans are tired of Republicans being in office for 16 years and they don’t see 'Windy' Davis as a leader, especially Catholics,” to a Lubbock newspaper. “But it’s just not Catholics, it is Baptists and people of other religions. They don’t support abortion, and 'Windy' Davis is an abortion candidate.”

According to campaign finance filings with the Texas Ethics Commission, Madrigal claimed $0 in contributions or expenditures in January 2014. In January and February, Davis spent over $26,000.

Texas’ new voter ID law did not appear to be a problem in southern border counties as well. Webb County Elections Administrator Oscar Villarreal touted his 95% Hispanic electorate’s increased voter turnout compared to 2010. Webb, a county with a 30.6 poverty rate, demonstrates a potential hole in the Holder Justice Department’s case that Texas’ voter ID law harms economically vulnerable voters.

RUT ROH...looks like the Rhode Island carpetbagger might not be as 'golden' a child as the DNC thought (or hoped) she might be!

Ahh, this might explain Rove’s fascination with immigration.
Unfortunately, immigrants tend to pick up the local political feel so they can fit in.
No different than any group of people.
We all want to feel part of the community.

Bring in the same group of immigrants, drop them in areas around LA and in 6 months they will all be hard core lefty.

It takes more than being pro life to be a conservative. The border counties are still largely democrat.

John Dingell has a pretty good record on guns but nobody around here will ever mistake him for a conservative.

Greg Abbot needs to run on that alone. Her one accomplishment was her useless filibuster. No one had ever heard of her here, except for the ones in her district.

Well DUH. No surprise there. Even the dims do not want illegals voting in Texas.

A “pro-life Democrat” is someone who will “evolve,” starting in...5...4...3...2...1...

Rove is worried for Rove’s sake.

Every contribution dollar that slips away from his whiteboard PACs, his TV appearances that trump his ever decreasing accuracy and importance, and every expletive deleted word the Tea Party sentiment crowd creates for him is a nail in this bustard’s political influence casket.

Good riddance.

These eastern liberals need to stop importing themselves and their leftist policies to other states. As for Davis, she’s gonna get smoked in November. Texas isn’t going to roll over for the leftist hordes the same way that California, Illinois, New York, and other large states have, at least for the present time. Even the Democrats in Texas have to take notice of their state’s economic success and temper their lefty ways a bit. Still, with that Hispanic vote rising every election cycle, Texas may not be guaranteed being a red state that much longer.

I’m not so sure about what you’re saying. Older Hispanics and their religious beliefs are not that easily separated.

Can it have anything to do with the Hispanic name on the ballot rather than Catholic or any other reason?

"No one had ever heard of her here, except for the ones in her district."

AND we hated her and her grandstanding politics.

That idiot Kim Brimer (her state senate predecessor) sat on his lazy ass and let her take his seat away from him (and us!)

They voted for a Hispanic Democrat in heavily Hispanic border counties. The fact that she won any of these is interesting. Her opponent had very high name recognition down on the border.

DO NOT interpret that her lack of support was based on her abortion stance. It was race-based politics, nothing else.

Word of caution: Beware, a “pro-life” democrat is still a democrat. View his so-called pro-life stance as a campaign promise, one from a democrat.

I was speaking to a Divorced Democrat Male, and he isn’t supporting Wendy s ince she let her Husband pay for her law school, then dumped him as soon as the last payment on her student loans was made.

"Madrigal argued in February, “The majority of Texans are tired of Republicans being in office for 16 years"

Which I'm sure is the reason Republicans haven't lost a statewide election in Texas since 1994, from what I've read. The 'majority' sure seems sick of Republicans. < /s>

Three months ago Wendy “Abortion Barbie” Davis was the darling of the liberal establishment and the person who was going to sweep the democrats to victory all across Texas and maybe the nation (there was even presidential talk about her).... Then she actually started campaigning and made so many gaffes and missteps that her drops in the polls could literally be measured on a day to day basis. Then a strange thing happened, she is suddenly nobody and the Democrats have moved on to the chick running against McConnell in Kentucky as the new savior of the party.

I have more than a few pro-life Hispanics, that I KNOW vote republican, who used to work for me here in North Texas that have gone back to South (border country) Texas to take care of their parents (who won't move from their homes).

Based on those relationships, and their feedback, the more senior Hispanics MAY vote for a Hispanic if on the ballot but if not, will vote their religious beliefs and typically republican.
