The term "Damascus steel" was folded steel that was made in Europe and distributed out of Damascus.
Steel in Japan was made in the same basic way but was generally folded more times, regardless it can't really be called "Damascus" accurately.

Its what passes for Damascus now, I`ll not split hairs (pun). But by any name, I still think its very aesthetically pleasing and didn`t mind paying extra for it.
