'Slow-poke’ bill aims to stop left lane lingerers
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution ^ | Aaron Gould Sheinin

Those who lollygag in the left lane of highways and interstates could be ticketed under legislation approved in the state House on Wednesday. House Bill 459, by Rep. Bill Hitchens, R-Rincon, was approved 162-9.

The bill makes it a misdemeanor for any driver on a divided highway who does not move to the right when a car going faster approaches from behind.

Hold on FRiend, it’s too early in the day for hostility.

Please allow me to be clear.

It doesn’t matter if excessive speed is the cause of the wreck or not.

Cars, and the human body simply, aren’t designed to survive mishaps at high speeds. http://www.bing.com/images/search?q=high+speed+collision+gruesome&FORM=HDRSC2.

Yes, anyone with a libertarian frame of mind will assert that a person should have the right to destroy themselves and their own property — I get that.

When there is a traffic tie up in Memphis, they just ride the ER lane until they can force their way into a lane narrowing area.

The New loaded Honda Accord comes with both side turn cameras when you activate your turn signal and rear camera for backing up. Neat idea, especially for seniors who have more limited vision. Our Equinox 4 cylinder 2 rows seating, comes in 6 cylinders and 3 row seats, has the rear view camera about the same gas mileage as my Corolla coupe.

I stopped night driving over a decade ago, to night blind to see to drive, why risk my or some else s life for my limitations, same way with Free Way driving. On the open road I go just a tad over the speed limit. I’m not afraid of speed, but I an terrified of 5 lanes of traffic that have kamikaze drivers one them.

It’s NOT obedience to the law. The law says move to the right, get out of the way, don’t be a vigilante. I’m not raising any questions, you’re being deliberately obtuse.

Never drive behind vans of any kind. The drivers are guaranteed to be slow and dangerous and this includes van drivers working in the dreaded private sector (tradesman) and soccer moms (of course)

By and large immigrant drivers are awful... get ahead of them too. Chinese being the worst, I once got rear ended by one. Where? In China Town!!!! Even worse if the immigrant is female.

Again, I’m not for lowering speed limits

Didn't say you were, and I'm not myself. I just want an accurate understanding of the cause of auto accidents in such a discussion.

You'll notice I don't take issue with your proposal that better roads and better drivers will reduce accidents, it is true, and doesn't need to be nuanced.

Let me state, I’m against blocking passing lanes. That was not my argument. My point was that driving well above posted speed limits is more dangerous than driving at or around the posted speed limits.

Wouldn’t that depend on whether the limits were posted based on proper engineering safety principles or not?

I misplaced this thread and only rediscovered it this morning.

When I started driving (sometime in the last century!) it was considered a courtesy to signal drivers by flashing your lights with the dimmier switch. Nowadays that can get you shot. Same for brake-checking.

One commenter posted how he turns off the cruise control and coasts (slowing down). That usually doesn’t merit getting shot but if he speeds up with the guy tries to go around him I have seen people run off the road into the ditch.

‘Ragers are no one to mess with (as far as I’m concerned) and I have to shake my head at the folks who toy with them.

The general idea is to arrive at ones destination safely. I don't like to tailgate or pass on the right. I'd rather flash the person once from 10 car lengths back, than tailgate to figure out their left lane intentions. If they don't move over, then I pass on the right when safe. I don't press the issue.

The ones that are really dangerous are what I call the dangerous do-gooders. They are the type that come to a complete halt on highways to let wild life cross the road. Instead of just slowing down and going around, they may even swerve in front of you to force you to stop.
