Baltimore's people of the woods: Inside the hidden homeless camps made of milk crates, wooden doors

A sheet of plastic laid over a clothesline. A mini-fortress of milk crates stacked under a tree. A thin mattress on a flimsy crate lying in a dark tunnel. On the edge of Baltimore's woodlands, dozens of the city's transients live in makeshift homes which they consider safer than homeless shelters.

Photographer Ben Marcin has captured some of the shanties in his thought-provoking photo essay, 'The Camps', documenting the struggle, loneliness and ingenuity of Maryland's people of the woods.

Along with the phrases “McJobs” and “recovery for Wall $treet but not Main Street”

If by some chance a Republican wins in 2016, the phrase will return on Jan 20, 2017.

If you look at the pictures you will see what a wide assortment of people. Some camps and abodes you can see that certain amount of pride was taken in construction and in the way the camp is kept. A clear indication that many of these people are proud hard working Americans. I needed to get this in before ‘The Bunch of Deadbeats’ crowd comes in.

Baltimore is run by Democrats. Maryland is run by Democrats. Democrats are the party of the people, the party of compassion for the downtrodden and all that. So, how is it that you have all these homeless in a liberal Democrat paradise such as Baltmore????????

Partially true, but in a homeless shealter everything is fair game. Spend the night and there is a good chance you will leave with rags about your feet because someone stole you shoes. It’s a uncommon occurance on the street and more than once the victim has been killed our savagely beaten if they put up a fight.

Yes saw that. Some of these camps keep their ‘yards’ better than some of my neighbor especially the section 8 ones!

A true ‘Deadbeat’ would not live under such squalid conditions. They will get Food Stamps, Section 8 housing, EBT, Obamaphones and whatever else they can lie to the government and get free....................
