Advocating a strategy of retreat in the face of tyranny.
Thomas Sowell is way out of the ballpark if he claims only the Dunkirk retreat as illustrating his take on political strategy. Why didn’t he review the Battle of the Bulge or countless other historical times of fight to the last man. I suspect it is because Sowell has more on his mind than principle which has been so important to the founding of the USA. I do not walk lock step with such thinking.
The commentary on this thread is some of the best I’ve ever seen especially your post #6 and stanne’s post #9, but so many others as well that I am still reading.
It’s reassuring to know so many conservatives have their eyes wide open and are tuned in to the same frequency.
Sowell is reacting to Cruz as if he thinks Cruz is a nutcase. He frames It in his usual great rhetorical prose, but he's totally wrong.
We are not facing a outside force intent on destroying us.
The force is from the inside this time and Washington would not be amused by it, yet would be powerless as a military General to do anything about it short of a Coup.

He makes good sense. When you occupy unfavorable territory and don’t have the strength to win today, it’s better to retreat, regroup and prepare to fight tomorrow.
I will never again vote for these fabian cuncators who refuse to win at all costs, constantly snatching defeat from the jaws of victory. GOP-E majority next year? May God forbid!
There also would not have been a United States of America if the patriots in Boston had not started it all with the Boston Tea Party. Even a mind as great as Sowell’s sometimes gets it wrong.
I guess that, on certain topics, there is no room for civil discourse at Free Republic.

Boot Camp and training is suppose to weed out those unfit for combat. Unfortunately there is no similar weeding out process in politics so we often elect people lacking in either wisdom or courage and more that a few that are simply outright frauds.
What Thomas Sowell does not get (giving him the benefit of the doubt) is that Cruz knew the battle would be lost but would expose for all to see who was just talking that talk and who was willing to stand and fight. You are never going to win a war if your ranks are full of cowards and traitors. Which is why I called Cruz’s tactics brilliant. Now we know who not to send back to the Congress. Job well done Senator Cruz.
Now about that Thomas Sowell “not getting it” thing. Sowell is a very bright guy, smarter and more knowledgeable than I. So if I can figure things out surely he can too. One thing I do know is that Cruz scare the crab out of the professional elites. Anyone attacking Cruz is suspect of being an elite or employed by one. I think Thomas Sowell might have just outed himself.
This is a mystery. I have two of Dr. Sowell's books and have admired him for many years. My guess is he's being blackmailed. How would any of us react if a beloved grandchild were threatened? Maybe the IRS has paid him a visit. I just can't believe these are his own beliefs. He's being terribly pressured by somebody, so let's just give him credit for his past brilliant work and forget it.
I don’t understand these attacks on Cruz by Sowell at all.
Sowell is not a man to take lightly... I haven’t read this series... yet. But whatever Sowell’s saying, it’s worth considering.
