That is a GREAT Anne Murray song. You are welcome.
Off for home...back in a bit.
I’ve never before heard Helen Shapiro’s “Don’t Treat Me Like a Child.” It scored big in the UK, but not in this country. She’s got the rock beat, 1961 style, down solid.
Erratum: the date for “Unchained Melody” by Les Baxter is 1955. It’s from the movie “Unchained.”
Upon my word what does it mean?
Is it love or is it me
That makes me change so suddenly
From looking out to feeling free?
I sit here lying in my bed
Wondering what it was I said
That made me think I lost my head
When I knew I lost my heart instead
So won't you please read my signs?
Be a gypsy
Tell me what I hope to find deep within me
And because you can find my mind
Please be with me
And of all the better things I've heard
Loving you has made the words
And all the rest seem so absurd
'Cause in the end it all comes out I'm sure
So won't you please read my signs?
Be a gypsy
Tell me what I hope to find deep within me
And because you can find my mind
Please be with me
Helen’s “Walking Back to Happiness” was another big hit of hers over there. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r1gaUVPz2D8
She was quite something before the Beatles (there is a video on Youtube of her with them). She became a jazz singer afterwards, which (she says!) was her first interest even at that young age. Another interesting part is that she refused a name change as was the requirement at the time in the UK (you know: Adam Faith, Billy Fury, Vince Eager, Marty Wilde; I can’t think of any females now, but there must have been some), and when some record company exec first heard her demo he thought it was a boy singer.
I used to work as a Summer retreat which would always have around 30-40 Japanese students for part of the Summer. Just before they left there would always be a “Japan Night” where they would do entertainment, cultural displays, Japanese cooking etc.
For their final act they all got up on stage and a little Japanese girl explained that they wanted to do an ancient Japanese folk song which was sacred to all Japanese.
When they started off everyone pretty much lost it laughing. Yep they did “Gilligan’s Island”.
