I’ve never before heard Helen Shapiro’s “Don’t Treat Me Like a Child.” It scored big in the UK, but not in this country. She’s got the rock beat, 1961 style, down solid.
Helen’s “Walking Back to Happiness” was another big hit of hers over there. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r1gaUVPz2D8
She was quite something before the Beatles (there is a video on Youtube of her with them). She became a jazz singer afterwards, which (she says!) was her first interest even at that young age. Another interesting part is that she refused a name change as was the requirement at the time in the UK (you know: Adam Faith, Billy Fury, Vince Eager, Marty Wilde; I can’t think of any females now, but there must have been some), and when some record company exec first heard her demo he thought it was a boy singer.
