The US finally wakes up after three months of civil unrest and demonstrations. The US MSM has provided very little coverage.

I’m not entirely up to speed on it all, but:

Ukraine had elections in 1991 and voted something like 90% to become an independent state from Russia.

Recent elections (last year or two?) elected a guy that leans towards Russia, or is a puppet of Russia. The western part of Ukraine leans towards Europe, the eastern part leans towards Russia. Has been that way since after the Mongols. (Was watching a history of it last night). So I’m guessing that the people that liked it under Russia were regretting independence. In the history video I was watching many of the older people missed their pensions and handouts that they got from Moscow. The younger people liked the freedoms. So some think this may not turn into a revolution, but more like a civil war.

I think that the country had voted on having a trade agreement with the European union, or they want to have one. But the current leader of Ukraine doesn’t want it.

Their current leader also suspended a lot of the constitution last fall.

On FR, some people are saying that Ukraine is being scammed to revolt and to “join” the EU. And scammed by Soros and his ilk to make the Socialist EU even bigger, or at least so the EU can reap any Ukraine resources. There is a link to a Soros blog on one of the recent threads. The blog is from several years ago where he talks about revolution in Ukraine.

Sounds like many of the people want “freedom”, but run the risk of falling into the trap of trading one poor ruler for another, which seems to happen most of the time. Most revolutions end up like the French Revolution, not the American Revolution.

Neither side supports American values of Liberty, Freedom, Property, Capitalism, Free Markets, Sound Currency, or Rule of Law.

The most dangerous to Americans is Hussein's choice.

“Can someone - in a nutshell - describe each side in this and which one is preferable? I imagine whichever side Hussein is on I would go the opposite. Thanks.”

Basically, one side wants to stay within the Russian sphere of influence and the other wishes to migrate to a EU-centric stance.

HOWEVER: John Batchelor had on a long-time student/observer of Russia last night (and he’s a regular guest) who opined that the unrest is being fueled by an ultra-nationalist cadre of pure thugs and violent criminals seeking to capitalize on the unrest. They seek to return to a time of violent anti-Semitism and ultranationalist behavior reminiscent of WW2 and the partial alliance of the Ukraine with the Nazis. I think the guest’s name is Stephen Epstein, and while he is a prof at NYU, he sounded absolutely cogent and well-informed for whatever that’s worth. In other words, the two sides could, in a more perfect world, resolve their differences democratically. But they are being provoked and goaded by this super-criminal group who represent no more than 5% of Ukrainians....or so Mr. Epstein says.

The path forward for Ukraine is probably best left to the Ukranians, this is undoubtedly a sensitive issue for Russia and the Ukraine has long been a part of Russia.

My opinion is that this is far and away the very worst foreign policy blunder of the 0bama administration, in a panoply of foreign policy blunders uninterrupted by a single success in any respect.

Like him or hate him (I frankly respect him quite a bit, but do not especially trust him) Putin absolutely saved 0bama’s ass by putting together the deal on Syria and giving 0bama a credible, if not graceful exit from what could have been yet another foreign military intervention. Something nobody needs nor wants. Obama might have used the opportunity to thank Putin and really upgrade and constructively reset US-Russian relations which have corroded badly of late under the uselessness of Hillary Clinton and now John Idiot Kerry, an international laughingstock and total fool. But 0bama, dirtbag backstabber that he is, has to diss Putin because Russians frown on anal sex. Whatever happens in the Ukraine and it does not look pretty, the US is in no position to intervene nor meddle, and once again, 0bama is exactly what Putin called him, a “a monkey with a hand grenade” who knows nothing about anything useful other than trying to intimidate and to gin up hatred and divisions. History will show this to be a decade-grade blunder, IMHO.

Thanks for your thoughtful summary and opinions! These developments are igniting the news, and I’m not familiar with the region’s colorful history. I know someone who’s half Ukrainian, but she doesn’t know much about the situation.
