Violent clashes have erupted during anti-government protests in Ukraine's capital, Kiev, with at least nine people, including two policemen, dead.
In the worst violence in weeks, police used rubber bullets and stun grenades as thousands of protesters marching on parliament.
A deadline set by the security forces for the violence to end has passed with no immediate sign of police action.
The clashes came as MPs were due to debate changes to the constitution.
The proposals would curb the powers of President Viktor Yanukovych, but the opposition say they were blocked from submitting their draft, meaning no debate could take place.
EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton said she was "deeply worried" by the escalation of violence, and urged politicians to "address the root causes".
Russia blamed the upsurge in violence on "connivance by Western politicians and European structures" and their refusal to consider the "aggressive actions" of radical factions within the protest movement.

Unfortunately, it appears that most of of Ukraine’s major politicians are corrupt. Some are more repressive than others, however.
There is far more than the energy access “wedge” going on, though that IS part of the picture. If the US gov’t had any sanity at all, we’d push for Western European access to all the energy it needs, including from Saudi Arabia, but we would also ramp up our own and Canada’s contribution to the global energy market as much as possible, thereby depressing prices and driving down Saudi’s income.
Actually, it might not matter. Even with all the money in the world, the Muslim world is too fractured and (with modest effort on our part) too easily turned against itself for the Caliphate to ever be successfully accomplished.
Also... Obama will be gone in a few years, and maybe even (longshot) effectively neutered by 2015. With the US, the Ukraine has a chance of a halfway honest friend in a few years. With Russia, it has no such chance.

At the very beginning, had been a peaceful protest against a president wanting to take the country back to Russia. Number of violent police crackdowns later, hundreds of arrests, some kidnappings and dead people in the forest have failed to pacify the population. Today, capital city is under a lockdown, in the western part of the country they stormed police stations to get weapons.
The whole case is an example of how not to handle a crisis.

True, now reference the Clinton war against Serbia to establish a Muslim organized crime/terrorist support state in Kosovo a Serbian Christian Province.
Russia objected and stood against NATO forces at the airport, but could do little more.
Keep in mind, Serbia was a US ally, fought for and saved hundreds of US airmen against the Nazi in WWII, and how they were treated by UN and NATO for resisting Muslim invasion from Albania.
The EU could not subjugate and hold Rhode Island if it were made independent and moved to the French-German border...
True, that's what they have NATO and the US for, the only difference is now, Russia has the capability to make NATO and the EU very sorry for trying that Muslim nation building again, witness Georgia, and the battlefield will be Ukraine.
Without being a smartass, the answer is no, you have to understand about a thousand years of history to really appreciate the spot Ukraine is in.
Oh, and our FR Borscht Brigade parachuted in to tell us it's all about the Saudis, Muslims, and George Soros.

Or, the opposite.
It seems rather odd that the Serbs would argue that being allies of the US during the 40's somehow outweighs the Georgians being allies of the US during the 00's.
