World’s largest solar plant is open, but its mirrors scorch birds (Cal--f Mohve Desert )

The world’s largest solar plant is officially online in the Mojave desert — and it is causing some dismay.

That’s because the technology the $2.2 billion Ivanpah Solar Electric Generating Station uses could be a threat to wildlife — it generates heat so intense there’s growing evidence it is scorching birds, according to The Wall Street Journal.

I’ve done Natural Gas compressor station work in this area.

It rained about 1/4” one day while I was out there.

They talked about the “massive storm” for 20 minutes on the news that night because it was such a rare occurrence.

If semi-fried birds are hitting the ground then four footed critters are benefitting. Plus lizards and other critters must get some nice shade from these mirrors.

I do as I enjoy them immensely. Not so keen on the predatory raptors but I consider birds to be a colorful gift from God.

Just wondering if cleaning all those mirrors is a job Americans won’t do...

Not to mention all the little critters that used to crawl upon the surface. Now they have those large areas where sunlight never hits the ground.
The Solar folks are killing all the little ones that used to feel comfortable in their habitat.

I’d love to see the % money-stolen-from-taxpayer subsidies on these things. I bet there is incredible fiscal criminality in these projects.

um.. and THIS is preferable to an oil rig? LOL

I have NEVER seen something more damaging to the environment than that solar array !

NOTHING can live there! that must be a total dead zone!

Lets be honest. This was a dead zone before they put the solar plant there.

“it generates heat so intense there’s growing evidence it is scorching birds”

This means that Ivanpah Solar Electric’s goose is cooked.

someone who knows how to post pictures here

post this picture of an oil derrick among flowers, so the environmental nuts that lurk here can see the difference between what they want (that horrid solar array) and an oil derrick.

From the article:

The $2.2 billion complex of three generating units, owned by NRG Energy Inc., Google Inc. and BrightSource Energy, can produce nearly 400 megawatts — enough power for 140,000 homes. It began making electricity last year.

By my (non-Common core Math) that equals approximately $15,714 per house for the electricity. I knew electricity prices were high, but THAT HIGH???

Hydroelectric dams

Kills Fish

Fish below dam feed on fish killed by dam, increased food supply results in larger fish than would typically be found if no dam.

several questions come to mind...

who is going to clean all the dust and bird poop of the mirrors?

who is going to weed between the mirrors when the weeds now growing in the shade grow taller than the mirrors?

will a freak hail storm destroy the entire array?

how many acres of land did they make an unlivable wasteland with this nonsense?

how much maintenance is required on this and how much fossil fuel is spent driving the people doing that maintenance out to this remote spot?

how much weed killer are they going to have to spray around this area over the years to keep down the weeds?

what is the plan to keep above weed killer out of our water supply?

No s$%^.

I’m beginning to realize that every major building project should call me first.

So I can tell them in layman’s terms what is going to happen and how stupid they are.

I could save billions.
