I jumped at the last-minute invitation to hear P.J.O'Rourke comment on current events and tout his new book on the Boomer generation at the Commonwealth Club last night in San Francisco. What a disappointment! He unleashed a scathing---and not funny to me----attack on the Tea Party and Ted Cruz. He said, "This is why politics should not be left to amateurs. Boehner is an adult. Ted Cruz is not." Also added "The Tea Party is a big tree and unfortunately big trees attract a lot of squirrels." In the past I have relished his writing, from National Lampoon's High School Yearbook to "All the Trouble in the World" which kept me in stitches as I endured the vacation from hell years ago.
A conservative he is not! At least anymore! Left without buying the book. Too depressed.
LOL That’s a shame. CO used to be such a nice state. ;^)
It is customary to ping Freepers that you discuss in forum.
I checked it out from the library. It was only very slightly funny.
O’Rourke wrote the hilarious “Foreigners Around the World” piece for National Lampoon back in the 1970s. Such a piece could never be published today. And O’Rourke would probably be jailed for writing it.
Because we have allowed our government to grow without restraint, and become suffocating.
I have been disappointed many times in this way by authors I thought were conservative or even just neutral in their public position. I don’t even recycle the books or sell them: I throw them in the garbage well wrapped so no one else will read them and be poisoned.
Let’s face it, fellows. As we advance up the hill we’re going to pass by a lot of bodies who weren’t up to the task.
Isn’t he the writer who said 2010 wasn’t an election, it was a restraining order?
I loved that line.
Are you sure I did not ping him?
Did u look?
Let’s try to do our jobs a little better, now, shall we?
Sounds like he’s “Jumped the shark”, unfortunately.
Just me and the cats talking.
Could be off-base.
I did not see a ping.
Ahh.. I see it in post #3.
Sorry.
His drinking has obviously taken its toll
No prob, bro. ;)
Rule #3
All politicians are scoundrels until proven otherwise. After which, they must make monthly installments of proof, lest they go back to scoundrel classification.
Two of my favorites are “Republican Party Reptile” and “Holidays in Hell,” which has a great piece about traveling in Lebanon in 1984.
His later stuff seems to have lost the edge. Now this...
It was nice knowing you, P.J.
VERY disappointing.
Republican Party Reptile has the hilarious piece about the Volga cruise with all of the Old Left types. I actually got the chance to question him about whether those characters were real. His response was “frighteningly”.
Bump for later
