I jumped at the last-minute invitation to hear P.J.O'Rourke comment on current events and tout his new book on the Boomer generation at the Commonwealth Club last night in San Francisco. What a disappointment! He unleashed a scathing---and not funny to me----attack on the Tea Party and Ted Cruz. He said, "This is why politics should not be left to amateurs. Boehner is an adult. Ted Cruz is not." Also added "The Tea Party is a big tree and unfortunately big trees attract a lot of squirrels." In the past I have relished his writing, from National Lampoon's High School Yearbook to "All the Trouble in the World" which kept me in stitches as I endured the vacation from hell years ago.
A conservative he is not! At least anymore! Left without buying the book. Too depressed.

P.J.O’Rourke joins a long list of what some Freepers used to think were conservatives.
We cheered Lindsey Graham during impeachment, yelled “you magnificent Batard to Karl Rove. I even remember wayyyyy back when Freepers loved Chris Mathews because he was the only reporter to go after democrats.

There’s a reason why he’s the left’s favorite “conservative”.

P.J. spends too much time with NPR types on “Wait Wait Don’t Tell Me”. I guess he’s just too sophisticated for us.

Because he knows Boehner and other rinos are doing all they can to move left and the tea party is holding everyone back.

Maybe he thinks he’s joining the winning side.

I even remember wayyyyy back when Freepers loved Chris Mathews because he was the only reporter to go after democrats. Yep. He went after Clinton so hard immediately after Lewinsky that Rush let him sit in for him a couple times.

Never found him funny alert. Same with Christopher Buckley.

P.J. ORourke is one of a long list of formerly prominent conservative writers who have long since past their expiration dates. Peggy Noonan, Pat Buchanan, R. Emmett Tyrell, and George Will are other examples. Fighting uphill in the Washington environment leads to some compromise of principle. Then there is the aging factor. Even prominent American writers like Mark Twain and H.L. Mencken wrote their best works before late middle age. It happens on the Left as well. If Garrison Keillor was ever funny, he surely is not humorous now. His Lake Wobegone show on PBS is dreadful, although I have not listened to it since 1998 or so.

So sad. I am cleaning out my bookshelves and PJ’s will definitely be boxed up for a book sale or wood stove pile. How soon before we hear about Ted Cruz and Pelosi co-hosting SNL?
