It looks like they changed it.

The quote, "police were relying on the public to come forward with information about the attack and are hunting six African-American males who allegedly raped the girl " was copied directly from the Telegraph article.

“....a man of African appearance”, “six African-Americans”, etc., sounds like a fair assumption that the perps were indeed black. I am curious to know how authorities determined these thugs were “Americans”?

They probably changed it as soon as someone pointed it out to them.

It was a pretty stupid mistake.

The “editors” were probably using the New York Times ‘style-book’ as guidance.
