I’m intimately familiar with the usage. More accurately, not ‘East Asian’, but rather, ‘Orientals’. Unless PC took over the latter term.

I believe that current usage is to reserve Oriental for things and not people. At least in public and on official forms. So oriental rugs and tea but East Asian immigrants. Maybe the crowd I moved with was very PC?
