That's why it's pretty chilling to hear Vladimir Putin hurling accusations at the West and pointing out that what's going on is identical to what went on when communism was established and religion was completely expunged from the Soviet Union.
Between 1917 and 1937, almost a quarter of a million Christians were executed, and churches that survived destruction were converted into things like museums of atheism. Russian President Putin, who hasn't been shy about expressing his disapproval of homosexuality and has banned what he defined as "homosexual propaganda," had this to say:
Many Euro-Atlantic countries have moved away from their roots, including Christian values. Policies are being pursued that place on the same level a multi-child family and a same-sex partnership, a faith in God and a belief in Satan. This is the path to degradation.
Speaking to his people in the state of the nation address delivered at the end of last year, the Russian president defended traditional values, pointed out the moral bankruptcy of the West, and maintained that conservatism, both religious and societal, is what prevents what he defined as worldwide "chaotic darkness."
Quite the opposite of what goes on in America, where these days the only form of permissible discrimination involves the denigration of conservatives and people of faith, in Russia, it's now a criminal offense to "insult" the religious sensibilities of believers.

The truth is peculiar. By 400 AD Christianity became dominant in the Roman Empire. Before then Christianity had several centers, so Christians were comfortable with the idea, and soon thereafter a second center of Christianity was founded in Constantinople.
This was wise as well because barbarians were gradually overthrowing Rome, which they finally achieved a hundred years later, so the capital of Christianity became Constantinople.
But a hundred years after that Islam reared its ugly head, and though it took until the 15th Century to conquer Constantinople, in the East, Russians assumed that Moscow would become a new capital of Christianity.
In 1448, the Patriarchate of Moscow (the Russian Church) became independent from the Patriarchate of Constantinople. Metropolitan Jonas, installed by the Council of Russian bishops in 1448, was given the title of Metropolitan of Moscow and All Russia. This was just five years before the fall of Constantinople in 1453.
From this point onward the Russian Orthodox Church saw Moscow as the Third Rome, legitimate successor to Constantinople, and the Primate of Moscow as head of the Russian Orthodox Church.
Well, it’s been 560 years since then, and though buried deeply, the Russians, or at least Putin, believe that Moscow is, or at least should be thought of as the new Rome, one of the centers of Christianity in the world.
While that might on the surface seem nostalgic, the underlying brilliance of this as a strategy, should rank as historical genius.
To start with, Putin can do this unopposed. To make Moscow into a capital of Christianity incites the anger of no one that matters. In effect, Putin has become a unifier of the Orthodox churches.
He already sponsored a conclave of Orthodox churches in Moscow, and it was a huge success, erasing divisions that have existed for hundreds of years. And after that great victory, he has even made overtures to Rome to join with them in unifying Christian orthodoxy.
Rome is both thrilled and terrified of the idea. I don’t blame them.
Putin’s gambit elevates him to the level of Constantine and Justinian I, both of whom are Orthodox saints.
At the same time, the secular and often pagan western nations don’t have a clue. Neither do the schismatic Protestant churches, caught up in their own struggles between secular socialism and Christianity.

The Russian foreign policy elite desperately need and want Washington now. The notion of their waiting for another administration doesn’t apply today: there’s an opening is Syria, and one in Iran, and one coming in Afghanistan. Three crises en route. The only way to solve these is with an American-Russian joint effort.
They need the White House now. Putin just made it up and bailed Obama out in Syria. Does he know that? I have no idea who’s got Pres Obama’s ear in these matters. Snowden is a bogus issue; there was a moment when Putin might have handed Snowden over; but Russia didnt want him. If Washington had returned a few Russians to Moscow, the trade could have occurred. By now, European sentiment is so much in favor of Snowden that Putin dasn’t hand him over to Obama.
Putin knows we have to fight the islamists
Well it is like my question I asked as a junior in high school, way back in 1983, “what if the USSR became the US and the US became the USSR?” Looks like I will see the results of my 1980’s era thought experiment.
I’d be careful fawning too much over Putin. If you’re looking for comparisons, he’s more Mussolini than Clinton, IMO. Violent, egotistical womanizer behind closed doors - if you believe most of the reports on why he’s divorced now.
Which one?
Clinton,
Mussolini
or Putin?
Also, to agree with a statement someone has made is a very, very long way from "fawning". I'm just trying to figure out Putin's motives in saying this.
That is why the Christians from the “global south” nations are coming to the west and to America to bring the good news of the Gospel of Jesus back.
Please see post number 26. Thank-you.
I hope you’re right, but Putin doesn’t impress when it comes to Iran. For heaven’s sake, the man has run interference with China for Iran. He must know the Islamic rebels would love nothing more than to detonate something in Moscow. And yet the man fronts for Iran. It just boggles the mind the stupidity of this.
If Iran gets the bomb, there will be half a dozen other nations in the Middle-East that will want one. It’s proliferation on steroids, and yet he hasn’t shown that he grasps this.
You know what, your premise is still sound. For all the wanker tactics of Russia’s leadership, we’re still both Caucasian races at least in part, and if we don’t get a grip and join forces in preparation for the future, there won’t be a future.
Actually, he'd be a crony capitalist, and Tea Partiers would be incensed about it.
Well Putin can look at how sucessful the Eastern Rite Catholic Churches that are united with Rome are .
Well, lets just hope it’s not too late.
The U. N. wants no religion at all. John Lenin was evidently their guru.
Imagine that...
Not surprised, considering that the UN is DYING.
America keeps sinking further and further into the abyss of degeneracy and evil. It’s going to be quite a historical irony if it turns out that Putin/Russia becomes the last man standing, in terms of fighting for and preserving Western Civilization. Even moreso if drawn into conflict, with America now no longer the champion of democracy and freedom, but representing the forces of moral deviancy.
With America embracing fag-marriage, dope, open-borders, and pushing a poisonous culture of depravity, it’s no longer that surreal a proposition to imagine.
From your mouth to God’s ears. I’m not of that mind on it.
I realize what a corrupted organization it is, but some things seem to have almost perpetual motion, and globalist Leftward Marxist ideology is probably one of the most self-sustaining things on planet earth.
P. T. Barnum had them pegged, whether he knew it or not with his truism, there’s a sucker born every minute.
Putin is not a good guy, but he is at least talking like one.
My, my how times have changed. For the worse.
Perhaps he actually believes it. Maybe he is admitting what communism did to his country and he understands it isn’t good. The alternative is Christianity. Islam certainly isn’t the answer.
One reason, though certainly not the only one, might be that he realizes the demographic collapse that is likely to occur if Russians don't begin procreating and raising more children within families. Homosexuality, promiscuity, and rampant abortion are already having the effect of shrinking the Russian population, and Putin, for all of his tyrannical bent, understands this.
