The liberal, proEuropean Union protests that first rocked Kiev have taken a darker turn, with right-wing vigilante groups rising to prominence amid violence and police crackdowns
Not long before midnight on Sunday, a few dozen men in ski masks and camouflage surrounded the headquarters of the Ministry of Justice in the center of Kiev, the capital of Ukraine, and smashed out the first floor windows with baseball bats. They made short work of the bars over the windows, prying them out of the walls with their clubs, and climbed inside. It was the third federal ministry the group had seized in a week.
Calling themselves members of Spilna Sprava, or Common Cause, the group has emerged as one of about a dozen obscure organizations competing for distinction, if not outright leadership, in the uprising against President Viktor Yanukovych. These groups range from right-wing radicals and soccer hooligans to military veterans and mobs of stick-wielding goons. And to the gall of more-established opposition figures, like the world boxing champion Vitali Klitschko, they have become the revolutions most commanding presence. Anyone with a stake in resolving Ukraines political crisis including the diplomats watching fretfully from the E.U. and U.S. will likely have to reckon with the role of these groups. But they are becoming increasingly hard to control.

As for the eagerness of the “liberal” Ukrainians to join the EU — the world would be a better place if the EU were to collapse tomorrow.

Interesting alignment. Doubtful there’s any bitchy uptalk goin’ on.
Baseball bats? One would think that baseball bats would be as commonplace in Kiev as balalaikas are in Houston.
Ever see them refer to Left Wing thugs in other nations?
These guys don’t miss a step.
Gets my vote!
....”The liberal, proEuropean Union protests that first rocked Kiev have taken a darker turn, with right-wing vigilante groups rising to prominence amid violence and police crackdowns”....
Better said ‘they are sent’ not rising. Same thing in Egypt to create chaos....and we know who loves to create chaos when victory is at hand.
The entire thing is a giant cluster****. This faction is linked with Svoboda (probably the best brawlers in parliament).
A lot more people are going to get killed if this isn’t brought under control soon.
“the world would be a better place if the EU were to collapse tomorrow.”
Them and Obama’s kakistocracy!
P.S. I knew I'd get ya for that album business!
“Right wing thugs...?”
I seem to remember that “thug” is the new “N” word!
Does that make Simon Shuster of Time “racist”? Or does that make the “right wing” the new “N’s”?
Actually, if you care to educate yourself, TIME might have actually hit the target this time. I don’t know about the Common Cause group, but the Svoboda movement, also mentioned, is an ultra nationalist group of fanatics demanding among other things that Ukraine Western borders with Poland be revised. Those, you might remember, were FDR’s and Churchill’s generous gift to Stalin at Yalta and Teheran of 1,000 year old Polish territories.
AFAIK, Russian rasist term for Ukrainians are “Banderovitz” - historically applied to these merry “right-wing” band.
Here they are, holding a picture of their "hero"
There is a good reason why a countries like that are better off under dictators, isn’t it?
I want freedom for Ukraine, I just don’t want those who celebrate murderers of Polish children as any part of their government.
Yep. Sooner or later, maybe not during our lifetime, there’ll be a war between Ukraine and Poland over Lwow (or Lviv currently), a historically Polish city, and certainly more Polish or Jewish than it’s ever been Ukrainian, which is something that sane Ukrainians readily admit. It was Stalin’s, Pete Seeger’s hero until 2007, clever plan to create a permanent point of crisis between those two countries, and FDR as well as Churchill, fools that they were, fell for it.
The problem is if the Poles get Lwow, then you’ll get the Germans asking for Stettin, Posen and Danzig back.
Interesting person.
Ukrainian nationalist. Allied himself with Germany in an attempt to free the Ukraine from the Soviets.
Murdered by the KGB in 1961.
But what’s with the three fingers? Is it Third Down?
The legislation, which has already been described as undemocratic by many Western politicians and international organizations, was passed by parliament on Thursday.
...The legislation approved by Yanukovych also envision up to a year of hard labor in prison for anyone convicted of libel, including on the Internet.
