The US Navy allowed beards for may years in the 70s and early 80s without much problem. And even more time if in Antarctica.

So what’s the big deal?

If I remember...it was suggested that sailors begin their beard while on leave so it would be partially grown in upon returning to duty. Do I remember that correctly?
