Michael Savage, Sean Hannity dial up radio feud
POLITICO ^ | 1/24/14 | MACKENZIE WEINGER

On the airwaves and behind-the-scenes, two major conservative radio hosts are waging a war for the afternoon drive — and the moral high-ground. A simmering feud between radio stars Michael Savage and Sean Hannity has burst to the surface now that the two men are going head to head in prime drivetime — battling for listeners and advertisers in an already competitive market.

Yeah I think you're right. Just a couple of comments.

I think the feud with Jim Eason had to do with a dispute Savage was having with a relative of Eason's (daughter?) at KSFO. But I do remember the dispute.

Lee Rodgers and Melanie Morgan ruled the morning -- I remember how much fun it was for them to invite the local newsrag on to present them personally with the acknowledgement published by the newspaper's own polls.

Do you recall the time Spencer Hughes (Sat and Sun back then) scheduled Pat Buchanan in-studio for a Saturday show? Savage demanded that management let him (Savage) have a Saturday special to do the interview. He got it. I don't recall that Savage mentioned Hughes. I do recall Buchanan saying later that he thought he was going to be up against a San Francisco hippie when he met Savage the first time.

I believe Hughes just got the time opposite Limbaugh now that Huckabee bombed. I was hoping that Metcalf would get it.

I recalled all that when I read this on a Savage Nation thread earlier this month.

Going to tune into iheart KSFO a bit early, yesterday I was treated to a bit of off air banter between savage and a producer with savage bitchign about how the previous host had called savage a “old firend” and savage complaining that he was not a firend and the previous host had implied that savage was the reason that host has his slot . . . It was kinda interesting to hear (see) how the sausage is nmade so to speak.

In general the hosts kept their comments about Savage off air back in the 1990s. Not so Savage but usually nothing like nowadays. In those days KSFO did not allow "best of" shows. And Barbara Simpson made the mistake of saying that she was filling in for Savage while he was on vacation that day. That infuriated Savage and the next day he lit into her personally something terrible while screaming that it was not a vacation.

When the word first came out that Rush and Hannity were moving to another station, I happened to have Savage on the car radio, as I was driving in the evening. He was talking about his move to the 3pm Hannity time, and from what I was getting from him ——— the reason Hannity was being moved out , was because Savage was moving in! What an ego!

Hannity can never be compared with Rush, of course, and I can’t stand his constant show-prep talk. I also hate his pampering Pamela what’s her name. But I do appreciate his acute memory, and his pit bull arguments with opposition.

Hannity is a nice guy, but shallow and boring.

Savage is not a nice guy, anything but shallow and boring, but has his own issues.

You summed it up perfectly. If I had to make a choice between the two, I'd want Hannity as my neighbor. But I'd listen to Savage on the radio.

My take:

Savage is brilliant but loathsome.
Hannity is a nice fellow but not nearly as sharp as he needs to be for the radio talk show medium.

I will listen to either of them when the Tom Petty channel isn’t working on the satellite radio.

On east coast time, Rush from 12-3, Howie Carr from 3-7, Tom Petty channel after that.

Now that I’m retired and have more time to listen to talk radio, I have a hard time listening to any of them. I’d like all of them to talk about America’s problems with communism and how the communists have taken over the Democrat Party.

If you read the Drudge Report, Free Republic, Weasel Zippers and other news sites, you will know what they will talk about.

I hope you don't mind but I'd be remiss if I failed to mention a couple of things vis-a-vis Jim Eason

I liked Garrett he was a real Democrat, didn't like Bill Clinton, was a friend of Lee Rodgers, and was the only one I called in S.F. I got on the air immediately to ask a F.O.B. about Vince Foster and the New York Post (Christopher W. Ruddy) articles at that time.

I wasn't that much of a weekend listener, but I do recall making an effort to listen to Barbara Simpson's shows.

When Dr. Laura came on at noon, I would usually switch to KGO to listen to Pete Wilson's show. He was very knowledgable about the news (being an evening TV anchor), and was only slightly left of center.

I recall for awhile there was a local Saturday morning tech talk show, where people would call in about their computer problems. I think that was back at the height of the dot com bubble, when desktop pc's was being revolutionized. It was always entertaining to hear about people's computer problems, and to hear about the latest gadgets coming out of Silicon Valley.

I also remember listening at night to Ken Hamblin's show, The Black Avenger, when it was cool to be a black conservative. No, wait... it was never cool to be a black conservative.

It's all coming back to me now... :-)

Jeff Katz had a brief stint on KSFO at noon, too, before he left for the east coast.

I also liked David Gold's show, and Brian Wilson as the regular fill-in (even though he did his show from Washington, DC).

Savage had nothing to do with KSFO's success, but he could have lots to do with its demise.

Hannity lost me with his worship of Rove (aside from the fact that he’s repetitive and shallow).

I stated this in another thread but Savage is the only person that makes me miss Hannity’s radio show. His new show is intolerable and it was a mistake to put him on as many stations in his new format as they did.

We already have a very crowded marketplace and Savage does not work before 9pm, IMO. I’d listen to Laura, Dr Laura, Glenn, Dan Bongino, Tammy Bruce, Mark Davis, Mark Belling, Bill Bennett, Bauer and Rose, Mike Church, Wilcow and even reruns of Car Talk before I’d waste time on Savage.
They made a JC Penney type of miscalculation, IMO. Too small an audience and too many options to accommodate the ad revenues required in such a large marketplace.

I gave up on Hannity a long time ago. He is a fake conservative. He pretends on radio and then wimps out on TV with his liberal and RINO guests.

With Savage, I will agree with him half the time, but on the things that he gets right, he will articulate that position better than anyone on the air. I’ll take that over someone telling me what he thinks I want to hear, which is what Hannity does.

Might have been Dan Savage, whose name actually is Savage. Michael Savage said that the Palin family reminded him of an episode of “Cops”, that she had been foisted on McCain and McCain should dump her. He compared her unfavorably to Biden. He did soften his attitude toward her later, though.

Did you hear Limbaughs show a few weeks ago when he opined that the mainstream media treats everything as a soap opera? So true. He didnt add that people in his industry often do the same thing.

You might have been amused to hear Savages “boat survey” show a month or so back. Evidently when you buy a boat in CA there is a questionnaire that the seller signs off on saying what if a ything might be wrong with the boat. They do this with real estate in WA. Savage was contemplating buying another boat ( after selling a big boat earlier in the year) and read the boat survey on the air! My theory is that his staff hates him and deliberately lets him go on with bad material, etc.
It used to be funny hearing him raise money for his defense funds a few days after talking about his boat, classic cars, etc.
That being said, I wish I could kick the Savage habit.

He seems to have good days and bad days. I wonder if it is a mental problem sometimes. At times, he is very reasonable and analytical. Other days, all he seems to do is bash other hosts, bore me with his latest medical problem (today it was a visit to get some skin cancer taken off his head), and go on and on about treif foods that do not interest me. He's a mixed bag.

What does anyone know about the new young guy in the 4-6 p.m. slot, David Keiran or something like that?

Can’t stand Kuhners grating voice. Wasn’t he the one who used to constantly suck up to Savage when he filled in for him?
