Target Corp. announced on Tuesday it would no longer offer healthcare coverage to its part-time employees.
In a blog post on the companys website, Jodee Kozlak, the executive vice president of human resources, framed it as a positive development for part-time employees of the company.
The Health Insurance Marketplaces provides new options for healthcare coverage that we believe our part-time members may prefer, she wrote. In fact, by offering them insurance, we could actually disqualify many of them from being eligible for newly available subsidies that could reduce their overall health insurance expense.
Kozlak added that at present, fewer than 10 percent of part-time employees that are eligible have actually enrolled in the companys healthcare plan.
Our decision to discontinue this benefit comes after careful consideration of the impact to our stores part-time team members and to Target, the new options available for our part-time team, and the historically low number of team members who elected to enroll in the part-time plan, Kozlak continued.

I work for Target, in Canada, and you can get basic care for about $30/month. It’s affordable for pretty much everybody.
Why is that surprising? Corporations maximize profits by cutting costs.
Most companies would love to dump health care - this will be hitting many employees - even full time ones within the next few years.
I work at a facility that is turning every full time job into two part time jobs. I foresee this happening this autumn when the new calendar year occurs.
If that’s a $500 annual payment...that stinks.
If it’s $500 per month...that’s $6000 a year before the employee even clocks in.
Talk about wealth redistribution.
The plans offered to part-timers typically have very restricted benefits, and a relatively low lifetime cap.
No doubt now illegal under the ACA.
Though it is better than nothing, which, given the rates in the exchanges, most part-time retail workers are likely to have.
BWAHAHAHA!! Thanks for my first laugh of the day.

That was Portugal’s solution to high unemployment in the 1970s, as they tried to absorb the citizens returning from the African colonies they gave up. 40 years later, and they still have high unemployment...
IOW obamacare is working as planned.
IOOW “What difference does it make now?”
Part time employee is 30hr/wk x @9/hr = 14040/year. That is 122% of poverty level and you can get Medicaid in many states.
