'I can't believe I've been shot': Last words of man killed by retired police captain (truncated)

A 43-year-old father was shot dead by a retired cop in a Florida cinema after a row about him texting his three-year-old daughter as they waited for the movie to start, witnesses said.

Chad Oulson was shot in front of his wife and horrified movie-goers during an argument with 71-year-old Curtis Reeves.

The victim's wife, Nicole, was injured in the shooting after holding her hands out to try to shield Mr Oulson during the confrontation at a movie theater near Tampa on Monday.

After Reeves fired at his chest the victim was heard saying: 'I can't believe I got shot', according to Fox News.

Reeves, who is facing life in prison if found guilty, has been charged with second-degree murder. During a hearing on Tuesday he appeared via video link, wearing a green suicide smock - a fire resistant outfit that can't be torn or turned into a noose.

The judge ruled he should be held without bond because of the severity of the charges, but the no bond ruling can't be confirmed until a live hearing with Reeves.

The shooter, retired cop or not, had no authority to tell anyone to do anything. He can ask the guy to stop texting. He can complain to management. He can move to another seat.

Anything beyond that is aggressive behavior, & likely far more disruptive to the rest of the audience that a texter.

If his aim was to stop a disturbance in the theater, he did the exact opposite - he created one. This makes him the aggressor & spoils his claim of self defense.

I doubt he went outside to get his gun though, as most theaters will not let you leave & return without damn good reason.

I know I’ve talked to well over two dozen people over the years who told me they entirely stopped going to the movies, due to such rude and distracting behavior by the fellow patrons. Seems to partly be a generational thing. The younger crowds have no concept of what used to be regarded as societal decorum, buttressed by a belief that any behavioral boundaries restricting them are an affront to their “freedom.”

Being disruptive in a theater used to be regarded as a pretty darned severe transgression. One that was NOT tolerated by either businesses or fellow patrons.

I call malarkey. Was he trained to shoot to kill or defuse a situation?

I honestly think you're mentally defective if you need me to link to your own posts published twenty minutes ago. You dismiss all statements except for your personal "revelation" that is nothing more than fantasy and an excuse to shoot someone.

The next time a cop stops you get three feet in front of him, jump at him, start screaming at him and then through a big container of popcorn in his face all at the same time and see just how many times he shoots you.

Do your own links and tell us who witnessed this, other than you and your gun porn fantasy playing inside your own head.

I take the cops side in this. All the guy had to do was shut off his damn cellphone. He got increasingly belligerent and the ex-cop obviously felt threatened. I’m sick and tired of belligerent bullies. Mean people suck. Don’t be an ass, you never know who you’re dealing with and what they have on them.

Whoa man. Sounds like you are getting increasingly belligerent there. Ex-cop means not a cop. Ex-cop means just like the rest of us. The rest of us are not going to get away with this.

The man's phone was not ringing, he wasn't talking on his cell phone, he was texting. Texting makes no noise and no flashing lights. I have been bothered by jerks in a movie theater but this movie hadn't even started yet. I can't imagine what set the cop off.

I'd be interested to know what happened or was said before the popcorn was thrown. Whatever happened, was it bad enough for someone to die because of it?

If I was on the jury, unless something shocking came out I'd vote guilty.

“While unpleasant to have a jerk in your face, possibly throwing non-injurious things at you, it is not grounds for responding with deadly force. “

Maybe. It depends upon what else was going on and what the jerk was doing/saying. The ex-Captain is still probably going down, but the devil is in the details.

Depends on what time period you are talking about. These days cops "don't have time" to defuse the situation, and their departments are supporting this approach by buying military equipment and organizing SWAT teams, and by clearing officers of any wrongdoing if they happen to kill someone without a good reason.

The "good" news is that the perp and the victim are both from the same race, so we'll be spared the idiocy of a years-long campaign of race-baiting in the media.

The bad news is that they're not black, which means the media won't simply ignore it.

Forget about just movie theaters. We’ve moved so far away from any basic notion of societal or behavioral norms that you can’t even sit for more than 10 minutes in a group of strangers anymore without having someone p!ss you off over something or another.

He had a history of thinking of himself as a theatre cop:

At the hearing on Tuesday, the court heard that Reeves had allegedly confronted a woman at a movie theater last month.

The judge was told that after hearing about the shooting on the news, a woman had contacted police to say Reeves had told her off for texting when she was watching a film on December 28.

Although she didn’t make a complaint at the time, the woman claimed Reeves had ‘glared at her the entire time throughout the movie and afterwards’ even following her to the rest room at one point.

He can complain to management

Reeves did complain and the management failed to do their duty. As far as shooting the victim it appears that the victim escalated the bad behavior and threw popcorn at the suspect. If something is flying at my eyes I would close my eyes and if I thought I was being attacked at the same time I would pull my gun and shoot with my eyes closed.

***in a group of strangers anymore without having someone p!ss you off over something or another.***

That happened years ago in a hospital waiting room when a family thought it was great fun to pass gas and stink everyone else out.

Like the girl I knew years ago who thought it was fun to chew garlic and sicken the people sitting around her.

In the current fashion, may I say that I “misspoke”. That scenario was actually brought up in the comments following the article. I didn’t mean to mislead anyone.

That said, unless we know for sure that he did contact theatre personnel and they didn’t respond, it is always a possibility and certainly ought to be looked into. However, he probably did have the .380 on him from the start, given his history. Maybe thinking he was being ignored by the staff put him over the edge.

I wonder how retired police captains fare in prison?

If they are in GP, and the other inmates know about it, they will get killed. I knew a few former LEOs in the joint, during my career. Otherwise, they are in PC, or walk alone facilities, designed to protect them from the other criminals.
