The Republicans in Arizona convinced themselves that McCain was a better bet than J. D. Hayworth, based on two actual bonehead mistakes Hayworth made.
Nevermind that McCain had made hundreds.

Does AZ have open primaries? Yes, and as I recall, McPain was very instrumental in pressuring the state GOP to keep it open during the last election.
He ran a scorched earth campaign against J.D. Hayworth.
