The speed limit on one of Britains busiest motorways is to be cut from 70mph to 60mph under a controversial plan to meet European Union pollution targets.
The first environmental speed limit is set to be imposed within months on a 32-mile stretch of the M1 for seven days a week, from 7am to 7pm
The limit will be in place for several years, and any driver caught breaking it faces a hefty fine and penalty points on their license.

We already went through that years ago. I think it was 55 that was held as efficient.

55 killed lots of people. When limits went up deaths went down.
Nixon gave us the 55 and year round daylight savings time.
“55 killed lots of people.’
This was due to people whizzing by folks that actually went 55.

Actually people were going to sleep around here and running off the road.
they drive in miles per hour over there?
[eyeroll] Who wasn’t paying attention and let the greenie weenies think they were in charge?
I don’t think it was that efficient. It took longer to get any where. That drove up the cost of delivered goods. It used more fuel, etc. It was a stupid Idea.
Hard to understand why the Left hates Nixon so much. He gave them a crapload of their own agenda.
62 here is 100 there.
Deaths went down in the 90s and not all of a sudden the deaths jump up? Do you have any real sources?
Hear, hear. It slowed down commerce, which is toxic to an economy. But don’t try to explain that to a hippie.
That makes them even madder, because they can't claim credit for it. Nazis and Communists pretty much agreed on most things but bitterly hated each other.
Double Nickels - The old double nickel speed limit was the most abused rule in America. I think the police gave up trying to enforce it or gave such small fines in some states people didn’t see it as a problem. The 55 mph speed limit did create a rather strange situation where speedometers in American cars were banned from showing speeds above 85 mph. I believe this was scrapped in the eighties as well.
As more all electric cars get sold, we will see more cars driving slower to make it to their destination.
