This article is correct. Walmart pays so low that the state subsidizes most of the wages and benefits to its employees.

We need to unionize them, then.

And when their prices skyrocket and the foodstamps no longer cover all the lobster and bourbon they've been covering, then what? Increase SNAP benefits?

It’s a disgrace——what the state does,not what Walmart does.

I don’t think you are correctly using the word “subsidize”.

The money people get from government is not based on them getting a job at Walmart. It is independent, and in fact is less than what they would get if they did NOT have the job at Walmart.

So it is false that the government is “subsidizing” Walmart’s wages.

It could well be that government handouts make it more likely people will take a lower-wage job. That is the danger of government giving out money, it skews everything. In the same way that government providing tax breaks for mortgage interest simply drives up the cost of housing, and government tax breaks for college drive up the cost of college.

But that is not the fault of any particular employer, ALL of whom have access to the same set of possible workers who are also qualified to receive government handouts.
