The first reform is to boot the popularly derived demagogues from the senate and return the senate to the states. James Madison determined this vertical separation of power between the states and the new government they created was central to securing our liberty. He was right and we have suffered mightily from the mistake of the 17th Amendment.Obviously, I support repealing the 17th Amendment (and the 16th). However, we need other Constitutional reforms (e.g., Congressional term limits). No one reform should be seen as a panacea.
Everything after repeal of the 17th is icing on the cake. Because of it, we overnight went from a federal republic to a democratic republic of the very sort our Framers' plan avoided. By it, the national government was consolidated in DC rather than dispersed among the states. It so much as invited an eventual Obama to come along and wrap himself with despotic powers.
Yes, the 16th amendment, made ridiculously progressive is also a horrible affront to a once free people.
