I would suspect that the best wood for building in New Awlens is Cypress. A little expensive, but a house built of Cypress will out last most of the steel there, besides Pitt can afford it.

They probably used green Southern Yellow Pine and it never dried out and likely touching the ground. Did it on the cheap.
