Where does the word "Subud" come from? It's a contraction of three Sanskrit words:
Susila: Noble or high quality or correct behavior,
Budhi: Spark of the divine that is in everything,
Dharma: Possibility to surrender and be guided by God or the universe.

This would make sense, considering that the future president and his mother lived together in Jakarta, Indonesia from 1967 until 1971, when young “Barry Soetoro” was sent to live with his grandparents – Stanley and Madelyn Dunham – in Honolulu, Hawaii, where grandma was vice-president of the Bank of Hawaii.

You see a lot of interest in banking amongst the Dunham women. In the 1980’s Ann Dunham Soetoro would take interest in microfinance programs and through her work with the Ford Foundation would be linked up with Peter Geithner, father of current Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner.

Madsen suggests that Obama’s mother was linked to Subud, possibly going back to the late 1960’s, and that she instilled that interest in her son and possibly her daughter – Obama’s half-sister, 41-year-old Maya Soetoro-Ng, who describes herself as “philosophically Buddhist.” And while you can be Buddhist or Christian or whatever, you can still be a follower of Subud and Bapak’s teachings.

A Muslim, Muhammad Subuh Sumohadiwidjojo, better known to his adherents as “Pak Subuh” or “Bapak,” began growing Subud (pronounced Soo-bood) in Semarang, on the northern coast of the Indonesian island of Java in the 1920’s and by the 1940’s was officially recognized in Indonesia. Subud is an acronym that stands for three Javanese words of Sanskrit derivation, Susila Budhi Dharma, and roughly means man and his inner force giving himself over to and surrending to Almighty God.

While some media has focused on Mitt Romney’s connections to the Mormon sect and its cult-like history, little attention is being paid to the Indonesian religious sect known as Subud. The mystical Javanese religious sect, founded by Indonesian Muhammad Subuh Sumohadiwidjojo, also known as “Bapak,” attracted the interest of President Obama’s mother, Ann Dunham Soetoro. Furthermore, Subud had a number of members at the East-West Center at the University of Hawaii, where Obama’s mother met Barack Obama’s father and step-father. There has been speculation that Obama’s mother’s close relationship with a number of Subud cultists in Indonesia and her Subud-style memorial service in Hawaii are indications that she, also, was an adherent of the Subud sect. Ann Soetoro also hired for her World Bank projects a number of Subud sect members from the International Subud Center in Cilandak on the outskirts of Jakarta

Bapak was a key player in the 1965 CIA-engineered coup against President Sukarno in Indonesia. Subud has also been accused of being yet another CIA mind-control religious operation. The Communist Party of Indonesia (PKI) and Sukarno’s Foreign Minister, Dr. Subandrio, as well as Ceylon’s assassinated Prime Minister, Solomon Bandaranaike, accused Subud of being a CIA front. The sect continues to maintain a religious compound in Front Royal, Virginia, about an hour’s drive from CIA headquarters in Langley, Virginia.

Thank you. I’ve been trying to get this across to people - that only the Federal Government (CIA) had the ability to change identity documents AND coerce cooperation from Federal employees - without actually coming out and saying ‘CIA’.

Here's an Advertiser Article that mentions Fuddy's connection to Subud in 2001. This is minor and unsurprising given all the prior posts about Fuddy and Subud. I'm just tossing this out there in case it adds a new piece to anyone's puzzle. I guess it was interesting to me that the article makes no reference to Fuddy as anything but one of the adherents (it's just a side mention, photo & caption. She's not the main subj of the article), that it only refers to her as Deliana Fuddy and that the article bothers to mention that at the time the Subud organization of which Fuddy was a member was headquartered in Chicago.

"Actually, Stanley Dunham existed. Last time I saw her (which was the first time) she was at a party being held by A. Schmidgall-Tellings. The attendees were mostly associated with anti-Sukarno forces in Indonesia. Plenty of former Dutch colonial bureaucrats, etc. There's really no reason to doubt she existed. At the same time I would expect the CIA front story for her probably can't withstand stiff internet scrutiny..."

SAD associated with anti-SUKARNO forces? Wondering, as an informer or a supporter? Zero showed up in Hawaii the same year Sukarno died, in June, 1970.

Sukarno was deposed by SUHARTO, evidently a SUBUD SUPPORTER. Just making a mental note.

That Lolo was a well-connected young Indonesian student, firmly entrenched in the fabric of the Indonesian ruling class, is supported by several facts.

Lolo’s mother was closely related to Sultan Hamenkubuwono IX, the hereditary ruler of Yogyakarta. From 1949 until his death in1988, the sultan was a towering figure of civilian influence within first the Sukarno, and later the Suharto government. He served as the national minister of Foreign Affairs under Sukarno, and from 1973 to 1978, he was also Suharto’s vice president.

Mayo Soetoro-Ng, Obama’s half sister, has publicly mentioned her grandmother’s “royal blood,” and University of Hawaii anthropology professor Alice Dewey, Stanley Ann Dunham’s close friend and thesis adviser, told me in a phone interview last year1 that:

Lolo’s mother, Ann, and Maya lived inside the royal area of Yogyokarta when I visited them in 1978-1979. She was related to the Sultan, I think probably at the second-cousin level or maybe even the first-cousin level. They — Ann, her daughter Maya, and her mother-in-law— lived in a house very near the center of that walled area, which suggested to me that she had a fairly close family relationship to the sultan. The betang is traditionally the area reserved for the extended royal family of the Sultan Hamengkubuwono. No one who was a foreigner without royal blood could live there.

Soetoro’s familial relations to the Sultan would explain why he received a scholarship to the University of Hawaii East-West Center program. Typically, foreign governments recommend students who have some sort of political connection.
