We are far from done anywhere in the middle east with respect to SAMs (MANPADs). And there have been choppers shot down with them. Just not in the numbers you expect.
With respect to CONUS military installations, I find it rather wry that they expect the worst of terrorist action, yet their surrounding civilian populations (and government) are not so concerned. Terrorist havoc in this country has always heretofore been largely aimed at the civilians save one or two examples.
I find it absurdly and ghoulishly comical that these installations go through all the machinations of stopping legitimate interaction in and around its confines, only to completely disarm its trained inhabitants.
With respect to what I expect, it is not about me but if I am in a combat zone and the enemy is pounding the crap out of us from the sky and my side has 400 Stingers, or a derivative thereof, and knowing my resource of weapons is in far greater numbers than their fixed wing resources, you figure it out. Once the cap is gone, then so is the protection for the rotary wing. The Afghans and Iraqi insurgents are awfully good at bringing down our choppers with their grenade launchers.
