U.S. birth rate drops as more women say 'no' to motherhood

The day that her four older siblings finally left home was the day Amy Wexler realized she didn’t want to be a mother.

She’d spent much of her childhood fighting with them over the bathroom, bedrooms, time, and money. When they left home, Ms. Wexler, who was still a teen at the time, enjoyed the luxuries her parents couldn’t always afford with a full house.

“I saw how it was with all of us and that had a big effect on me,” said Ms. Wexler of Toledo. “I just never thought it was my cup of tea. Just like I couldn’t do a surgical job, it’s just not a good fit.”

The U.S. birth rate dipped to an all-time low last year as more women like Ms. Wexler decided against motherhood. In 2012, there were 63 births per 1,000 women of childbearing age, compared to 69 births in 2007 and 118 in 1960, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. It marked the fifth year in a row for the birth rate decline and the lowest rate on record since the government started tracking fertility rates in 1909.

Yes. Isn’t that wonderful?

By 2060, the U.S. joins Central and South America - some of the most violent, brutal and dysfunctional places on Earth - as being mostly hispanic (I refuse to capitalize that name).

Brazil with nukes as someone posted here about 10 years ago.

Isn’t that great for the future of humanity?

The World’s Policemen will be....Mexican police.

Joy Joy.

There is something deeper here that deserves investigation.

Biologically and psychologically, some people are just designed to be parents, but many are not. This creates a biological problem, of how to prevent those who shouldn’t have children from interfering with those who should.

A strong argument can be made that homosexuality, prostitution, post-menopausal sexuality, and socially enforced marriage are schemes to prevent non-breeders from such interference; though marriage has several other very valuable biological purposes.

But what at least western society lacks is a means of properly using its non-breeding adults for productive ends.

For example, in old China was the tradition of the Amah (a word now known almost exclusively for its utility in crossword puzzles.) These were ‘polite’ women whose families could not afford a dowry for their marriage, or who were otherwise not desired for marriage. It was an alternative to prostitution or starvation.

The Amah would be sort of adopted by a family, not as a servant, but something like an honorable maiden aunt. She would help with household chores, and do some cleaning and cooking, act as a nanny, and receive a stipend while living with the family. This would be on condition that she not date men or get married. Some of them were lesbians, but they were discreet about it.

Unmarried men could either join the army or be itinerant workmen. They were looked at as less respectable.

But western nations just generally ignore the unmarried, since they are outside of the optimal social place. And this is something of a waste.

Yet in the final analysis, the people who have and raise children are essential to the future, so society needs to create circumstances that encourage them to have several children, not just one or two.

And these figures don't include the massive increase in legal immigration contained in the Gang of 8 bill. We will bring in 33 million legal immigrants over the next decade, 87% of whom are classified as minorities by the USG,

According the Congressional Budget Office (CBO), the Gang of Eight Bill (S.744) would dramatically increase legal immigration while reducing future illegal immigration by only 25 percent. Based on CBO's numbers, the Center for Immigration Studies projects that under S.744 the foreign-born (legal and illegal) share of the U.S. population would hit a record high of 15 percent in 2020 — surpassing the all-time high of 14.8 percent reached in 1890.

Based on CBO's analysis, we further project that the foreign-born would reach 17 percent of the population by 2033, a level never before seen in U.S. history. The total size of the foreign-born population would grow to 55.9 million by 2023 and nearly 65.2 million by 2033 if S.744 becomes law. To place this into perspective, the foreign-born population was less than 20 million as recently as 1990 — 7.9 percent of the total population.

No, you’re not. That’s why some people frown on pre-nups. But it’s only human. Up to that point, children are taught to consider possible negative consequences of their actions and be practical and realistic and take a businesslike, not over-emotional approach to things. Fear of a bad marriage experience affects women, too. I know it did me. I didnt see a lot if happy marriages modeled among my parents and aunts and uncles. My cousins are the same way, I know, even if below the conscious level. A few if them have since managed to have good marriages in middle age, after a few tries. And that’s great, but they didnt have children with those people, most of whom were busy in other bad marriages (And I’m not talking vague dissatisfaction here-I’m talking real abuse, serial adultery, mental illness, substance abuse and horrific in-law problems)

You’re kidding! Must be the hormones they’re on, something I said no to, and am glad. I can’t imagine going out on the pull. If I we my to a club now it would be for the music and dancing. I’ll be 58 in Feb. do these women look good for their ages? I do except I’m overweight(though not as bad as a few years ago) and some days crippled up. I have no desire for men more than 15 years younger than me.

Breeders is a term some gays have for straights. Then they wonder why people like Phil Robertson speak out against them.

Sometimes it’s too late period. Peak fertility for women is under 30. Men’s fertility also begins to decline, though much more slowly. This sets the stage for the fancy fertility doctors and their technologies.

It depends on the community. In some,Iike the one I used to live in in Seattle, they are exalted because they are the majority. These are often also gay neighborhoods. But I realize those are in the minority. Singles are odd people out in most places still, I guess.

Selfishness and lack of foresight. When she is in the sunset of her life, the only thing that will give her joy and happiness would be her children, grandchildren, and family. Not her career, not the trips she took, not the parties she attended, etc.

They won’t be “minorities” any more, will they?

When did we vote to become a minority in our own land?

Missed that one.

Lot of those women out there right now.

Look forward to sappy tv programs about how lonely they are and why we need to do something about it.

Forget it. We have our kids to worry about, not the terminally suicidal.

This is probably the only country in the world that voluntarily let the racial/ethnic majority become the minority. We have entered the era of tribal politics.

Well, they could be “massaging the figures”, but there is an alternate explanation. It could be increasing sectionalism. IOW, 4.8% and 7% are averages for the whole country, and as parts of the nation are as you say empty, depressed, with rocketing unemployment and collapsing businesses all over the place, it follows that other parts of the country are doing VERY well indeed.

The only part of this Republic that is doing “very well” is DC and the surrounding area. Everywhere else is locked into depression. I know this through 40 years of business dealings with companies located all over this country.

WWII also had an effect, some bred and some waited. I was born in 1938. My brothers were born in 1946 and 1948.
