Well the theory is that what the Canaries are is just manifestations of a hot spot and the eurasian plate is moving east to west over it.

Which is kinda contrary to the known tectonics but at any rate yep it’s Island building....lol

I hear that island off Japan is still growing! :)

It might pay to run a camera down where this quake occurred and check for a smoker. The water is pretty deep there. Maybe 2 miles or more. Regardless, I'd bet there will be more magma coming to the surface at El Hierro.

The one that spawned the report on it crashing into the ocean and causing a huge tsunami is the Cumbre Vieja on La Palma island. The volcano section they mentioned in the report is on the WNW coast of the island, basically directly at NYC.

El Hierro is the island directly to the south of La Palma.

The west coast faces into the Atlantic, east towards Africa.

Sounds like you live in a beautiful and safe spot, sevenufnine. A little shake never hurt anyone. It’s when the books and cans and knickknacks start flying thru the air that serious damage is done.

I had just moved into a new apartment in SanFrancisco when a moderate quake hit. Two dogs, a cat and I ran thru rooms deciding what to rescue…of course, the full-length mirror leaning against the wall, hadn’t been properly installed yet. So I stood and held it up while the shaking went on, pets frowning at me as if to say, “Why don’t you STOP this shaking? “

And I almost forgot the ‘89 World Series Quake — 6.9 I lived quite close to the San Andreas fault, buildings in my neighborhood sustained major damage, with refrigerators flying through apartments etc. I wasn’t home when quake hit. Elevator went out in my bldg, I had to walk up five flights, rubble in the halls; my neighbor with whom I shared a long wall was shouting, stuck in her apartment. I put my shoulder to her door and forced it open.

. Shocked to see china cabinet tipped over, part of the ceiling down, etc etc. Then we went to my apartment door, it opened with no problem. NO DAMAGE, and I mean zero. NOTHING. My cat gave me that look, “Where were you? I had a heck of a time keeping everything in place.”

Anyway, it’s really interesting when a big disaster hits, what gets wrecked, what doesn’t. Glass-doored china cabinets are not a good idea, little locks on every cabinet, kitchen, bathroom, etc, are a good idea.

I don’t think you have to worry much about quakes, though. Seems like a safe area.

Isn’t this the place where if half the island slid off a fault line it would cause a massive tsunami that would wipe out the eastern seaboard of the US?

Tremor has increased wicked these last few hours.

If you look at Chie recorder it’s hard to decipher for they have it scaled back so but you at the other stations on the other islands!!!!

Starting to get the feeling that it's just a matter of time before that sucker lets go in a bad way.
The face of the volcano can't hold on for ever.

Hope I'm wrong.

Yep, and the water is deep around that island. It’s like the people there are living atop a 10,000’ mountain with fire coming out the sides.

Honestly, if a worst case tsunami is formed, I’m kind of thankful Florida is where it is considering where I live.

yeah those were great recordings....!

the thing is if memory serves me correct the tremors were only recorded right before the new volcano vent appeared in the ocean back in 2011.

But it’s just so hard to tell which recorders now are visualizing the same data. I know for sure that CHIE is scaled way back but not sure about the other Islands.
