North Korea explodes myth of Kim dynasty

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) – North Korea’s propaganda machine has long kept alive the myth of a serene, all-powerful ruling dynasty that enjoyed universal love and support at home. In a single stroke last week, that came crashing down.

In attempting to justify the execution of his uncle, who was also considered North Korea’s No. 2 official, young leader Kim Jong Un has given the world a rare look behind the scenes of a notoriously hard-to-read government.

It is not a pretty sight, and many analysts believe Pyongyang’s eagerness to pillory Jang Song Thaek not only destroys the image of unity projected by state-run media, but also acknowledges dissension and a dangerous instability.

Kim Jong Un “has managed to tarnish his own image, look like a modern Caligula, and give the lie to 90 percent of the bombast emanating from Pyongyang,” said Bruce Cumings, a history professor at the University of Chicago.

“Whatever one thinks of this regime, from the standpoint of the top leadership, this was a politically stupid, self-defeating move,” he said.

In a kingdom the people are not free, they are all subjects who can be executed at the slightest whim of the monarch.

I beg your pardon?

What kind of dunderhead would believe anything the NK said?

If they said it was raining I would leave my umbrella at home.

They lie.

All the time.

About everything.

They are something like demonrats in that regard.

Dork Dynasty

I would have thought that A&E, in keeping with their desired target audience, would want to replace the Robertson's show with a reality show about Barney Frank's home life. They could call it "D*ck Dynasty" [vowel censored].

Their primary commercial sponsor could be K-Mart

Problems with the law can also be made to go away with bribes. “Two people in Cheongjin, North Hamgyong Province were sentenced to two years in prison for watching a South Korean film. They were put in prison in Kangwon Province but paid some money and were released three days later,” a defector testified. “Rumor has it that prison guards are getting rich.”

A source said, “There’s a widespread sense that everything from cradle to grave can be solved with money.” In border regions, guards earn money by turning a blind eye to or even helping would-be defectors.

Currently, a U.S. dollar is worth about 7,000 North Korean won. Would-be defectors pay border guards $40 to cross the Apnok or Duman rivers, and $60 to carry old or feeble people on their back.
